DTA, TG analizleri ışığında gerçekleştirilen ısıl analiz sonucunda elde edilen sülfatlaşma reaksiyonu sıcaklık aralıkları; Murgul tüvenan cevheri : 577oC-608oC Küre tüvenan cevheri : 545oC-563oC Gümüştaş tüvenan cevheri : 576oC-610oC Küre pirit konsantresi : 548oC-594oC Divriği tesis artığı : 540oC-584oC Murgul artık numunesi : 478oC-565oC Küre artık numunesi : 486oC-548oC Lefke artık numunesi : 497oC-578oC Murgul kalkopirit konsantresi : 512oC-707oC Küre kalkopirit konsantresi : 531oC-652oC olarak tespit edilmiştir. Her numune için gerçekleştirilen kavurma-çözündürme deneyleri sonucu maksimum bakır (Cu) çözünme verimini veren kavurma sıcaklığı, ısıl analiz sonucunda tespit edilen sülfatlaşma reaksiyonunun meydana geldiği sıcaklık aralığında bulunmaktadır.
The beneficiation of complex sulphur raw materials containing colourful metals by pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods is carried out with sulphation of these materials by roasting and decomposing either in water or dilute acid. Sulphation roasting is an important stage of metal production and beside the other researches for this process, the least interest was given on the characteristics of these materials formed in different ways and origin. One of the aims of this study is to cover the lack of this situation, totally 10 samples were used and classified into 4 groups as raw material, pyrite concentrate, chalcopyrite concentarate and waste character sample. The raw materials are obtained from sulphur copper mines which are located in Artvin-Murgul, Kastamonu- Küre and Gümüşhane regions. The samples with waste character are represented by the tailings of Divriği iron benefication plant, Küre flotation plant, Murgul flotation plant and tailings of flotation plant located in KKTC-Lefke region which was kept in pools under atmospheric conditions for years. In addition, the pyrite concentrate of Küre flotation plant and chalcopyrite concentrates from Murgul and Küre flotation plants forms the other group of samples. The chemical properties of the raw materials used in experimental studies were examined and the results showed that Cu content of 10 samples were in the range of 0,168- 16,52 %, Co content was 0,029-0,222 %, Zn content 0,0028-9,54 % and Fe content was 22,6-41,17 % . In addition, S (sulphur) and SiO2 contents which were thought to be effective on sulphation roasting process were determined in the range of 14,28-16,28 % and 0,58-24.75 % respectively. For determining the mineralogical properties of the samples with different chemical properties, XRD analysis were performed. According to the results; quartz, pyrite and chalcopyrite were generally found in all samples but peak for chalcopyrite was not observed in the material with waste character and pyrite concentrate obtained from Küre region. One of the most characteristic situation is that hematite mineral with Fe2O3 was observed in only tailings material while not found in other samples. Divriği tailings sample contains Plancheite, Langite, Siderite and Saphlonite minerals unlike the other samples. Also, secondary sulphur formings namely Ramsbeckite, H.Jarosite, Zinc Melanterite minerals were determined in Lefke old flotation plant tailings which was kept in the pools which were under atmosheric conditions for long period of time. In the scope of this thesis, while roasting tests and the following leaching tests were examined, the ratio of metals in solution to total metal (metal dissolution yield) was calculated for each Cu, Co and Zn metals. In general, considering the colourful metal contents of the raw materials used in experimental studies, Cu content was found higher than the other components, and the samples used was determined to be potentially copper mineral, chalcopyrite concentrate containing Cu or the products obtained from Cu mineral enrichment plants. Additionally, if the low grade of Co, Zn of these materials were taken into account, the examination of the results by their Cu content would be a better assumption. For that reason all the examinations were carried out considering the Cu content. In order to determine the optimum conditions for roasting process assaying high metal dissolution yields, the roasting tests were carried out at standart size as (-0,106 mm) with raw materials having different mineralogical and chemical properties. In roasting experiments, the effect of temperature and time were examined and leaching test were performed after all roasting tests. Optimum roasting temperatures were determined by taking account the maximum sulphation and Cu dissolution yield results found in experimental studies. In order to evaluate roasting-leaching test results and to present the behaviour of these samples during roasting process, Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermal Gravimetric (TG) analysis were performed. The curves obtained from DTA, TG and DTG were interpreted and the temperature range for Cu sulphate formation were determined for each sample. The results of roasting-leaching tests showed that the temperatures for maximum sulphation and accordingly maximum Cu dissolution yields were obtained at 680oC for Küre& Murgul concentrates and Murgul & Gümüştaş run of mine ores, at 550oC for Küre run of mine ore & Küre concentrate of pyrite and the tailings samples of Divriği while at 500oC for Murgul tailings of flotation – Küre tailings of flotation and Lefke tailings samples. Additionally, considering the thermal analysis results with the help of DTA, TG and DTG methods, the temperature fields were identified in which the sulphation of Cu metal were formed and the findings from this studies were proving the results of roasting- leaching tests. According to the thermal analysis results, temperature ranges for the formation of reactions including copper sulphates (CuSO4 → CuO + SO3(g)) and copper oxisulphates (2Cu2S + SO2(g) → 2CuO.CuSO4) were found as; Murgul run of mine ore : 577oC-608oC Küre run of mine ore : 545oC-563oC Gümüştaş run of mine ore : 576oC-610oC Küre pyrite concentrate : 548oC-594oC Divriği tailings : 540oC-584oC Murgul tailings : 478oC-565oC Küre tailings : 486oC-548oC Lefke tailings : 497oC-578oC Murgul chalcopyrite concentrate : 512oC-707oC Küre chalcopyrite concentrate : 531oC-652oC According to DTA and TG analysis results, the sulphation reaction for Murgul chalcopyrite concentrate starts at low temperatures (512oC) and continues to high temperatures as 707oC. The roasting-leaching results of this sample showed that the sulphation after roasting process occuring from low temperatures, the Cu dissolution yield was found approximately 80 % and by increasing the temperature, sulphation and accordingly the yield of Cu dissolution were also increased. At the highest point of temperature as 680 oC, maximum sulphation and accordingly maximum Cu dissolution yield (99,85 %) was obtained. According to the results of thermal analysis, CuO is formed after decomposition of sulphates at high temperatures (>707oC) and Cu dissolution yields starts to decrease. The experiments carried out with Küre chalcopyrite concentrates were also in proportion to Murgul chalcopyirte concentrate but in the samples with tailings character, the sulphation started at lower temperatures and continued in a narrow range of temperatures and end at a lower temperature compated to chalcopyrite concentrates. For example, the formation of Cu sulphate and copper oxisulphates starts at 486oC and continues until to 548oC and after that point forward the copper sulphates were decomposed in Murgul flotation plant tailings sample. The sulphation roasting and leaching tests with the same sample which were carried out in parallel of thermal analysis tests, the temperature at which the maximum values of sulphation and Cu dissolution recovery was found as 500oC. At temperatures more than 600oC, Cu dissolution recovery decreases with decomposition of sulhates and the formation of CuO. Evaluation of the thermal analysis results of the samples with run of mine ores showed that the temperatures for Cu sulphate and Cu oxisulphate formation starts at approximately 600oC for Murgul and Gümüştaş ores. In addition, the decomposition of sulphates was occured after 608oC for Murgul run of mine ore and 610oC for Gümüştaş run of mine ore. The results of the sulphation and leaching tests and thermal analysis tests were in proportion for that samples. Considering that results, maximum sulphation and accordingly Cu dissolution yield tends to increase from low to high temperatures. This increase became maximum at 600oC and after 650oC, the decomposition of Cu sulphates followed by the formation CuO, a decrease was observed for the Cu dissolution yield values. According to the results of thermal analysis for Küre pyrite concentrate and Kure run of mine ore, the temperatures for formation of copper sulphate and copper oxisulphates were (548oC-594oC), (545oC-563oC). Also, the results of roasting and leaching tests were in proportion to this results, and accordingly the maximum Cu dissolution yield were found as 550 oC. As a result of decomposition of sulphates, the decrease on the Cu dissolution yields were clear after 650oC. Unlike other tailings samples, according to the results of roasting-leaching tests of Divriği tailings sample, the maximum Cu dissolution yield at 550 oC, suddenly changed to decrease after 600oC. However, thermal analysis results for that samples proved this situation and the temperature range for the formation of copper sulphate and copper oxisulphates was found as 540oC-584oC Beside the optimum roasting temperatures as results of roasting-leaching experiments, variations were also obtained for maximum Cu dissolution yields. Generally, these values can be attributed to the sulphur content for each sample (increase of sulphur content resulted by increase on Cu dissolution yields). The sulphur content is one of the important parameters on sulphation roasting of ores because one of the components in solid-gas reactions providing the sulphation is sulphur. To provide higher sulphation recovery, some researchs and applications which includes sulphur containing additives. To demonstrate the diferent characteristics of 8 samples except chalcopyrite concentrates during sulphation roasting, kinetic studies were adopted and the activation energies were found at the range of 0-810oC. The activation energies calculated from kinetics studies by Coats-Redfern method for each sample are given below; Murgul run of mine ore : 103,56 kJ/mol Küre run of mine ore : 63,27 kJ/mol Gümüştaş run of mine ore : 133,61 kJ/mol Küre pyrite concentrate : 115,81 kJ/mol Divriği plant tailings : 83,06 kJ/mol Murgul tailings sample : 28,91 kJ/mol Küre tailings sample : 43,94 kJ/mol Lefke tailings sample : 26,61 kJ/mol As reported in the former findings that the activation energies calculated by kinetic calculations for tailings samples showing sulphation property were at lower degrees compared to other samples. The highest activation energy (133,61 kJ/mol) was obtained for Gümüştaş ore, while the lowest activation energy (26,61 kJ/mol) was obtained for Lefke tailings sample. The reason for lower activation energy values can be attributed to the major quartz content with siliceous structure and the presence of hematite mineral as the major source of iron content. If a relation was related between SiO2 content and the calculated activation energy, it was found that increasing the SiO2 content resulted by decrease on activation energy. Therefore, the samples with tailings character assaying high SiO2 content have lower the activation energy compared to other samples. In addition, the reason for the lower activation energy (63,27 kJ/mol) calculated for Küre run of mine ore can also be explained by high SiO2 content. In addition, the increase on Fe and S content is another compontent for decreasing activation energy values. If the samples are mineralogically examined, the sulphation starts at higher levels for the minerals with higher pyrite content and accordingly, the activation energies of that minerals is higher. The high activation energy (115,81 kJ/mol) for Küre pyrite concentrate seems to confirm that situation. At the final stage of the study, in order to evaluate mineralogically, XRD analysis were performed for the samples obtained from roasting for 1 hour at different temperatures and by that way, the effect of roasting to the mineral structure at different temperatures was also shown. According to the results of XRD analysis performed for all the products at all temperatures, the basic conversion mineral is hematite. Also, the transition mineral maghemite having a chemical formulate as γ-Fe2O3 which was formed after the oxidation of pyrite presented peak with hematite. In addition, the magnetite mineral forming at high temperatures during the last stage was observed in Gümüştaş ore sample, Küre flotation plant tailings sample, Lefke tailings sample and also in the product of roasting product at 680oC of Küre chalcopyrite concentrate. An example for the iron sulphate mineral which was formed at low temperatures and by the reaction of iron metal with gaseous phase is rozanite forming which was observed in Murgul run of mine ore, Murgul flotation plant tailings, Lefke tailings sample and the product of roasting at 500oC of Divriği plant tailings. If the results were evaluated by the content of colourful metals like Cu, Zn, Co, the sulphate formation of the copper metal with the highest content could be observed. The copper sulphate formations like Guildite, Chalcokyanite, Brochantite, Cyanochroite, Gunningite gives peaks at low temperature (500oC) and high temperature (680oC) within chalcopyrite concentrates. In addition, Cyanochroite was found as a small peak within the product of roasting at 680oC of Gümüştaş ore. This study showed that sulphation reactions followed by the sulphation roasting process carried out with raw materials with different origin reveals variations depending on their structures and mineralogical characteristics. As sulphation and the decomposing conditions of these sulphates differs, considering the XRD analysis, alteration within the mineral structures by sulphation roasting occured in the order given below; • The decomposition of pyrite, forming of iron sulphates and decomposing, forming of hematite, forming of transition mineral maghemite and finally forming of magnetite • The oxidation of copper sulphurs, forming of copper sulphates, forming copper oxides and finally forming of copper ferrite.
