After the destructive earthquakes (1992 Erzincan, 1995 Dinar, 1998 Adana-Ceyhan, 1999 Kocaeli and Duzce) as a consequence of poor reinforcement detailing, lack of transverse reinforcement in the joint region, as well as the absence of any capacity design principles, brittle failure mechanisms are expected either at local level(e.g. shear failure in the joints, columns or beams) or global level(e.g. soft storey mechanism). The complexity of the behavior of beam-column joints has been well recognized in the past as confirmed by the major effort, dedicated worldwide in the past thirty-forty years to the development of appropriate seismic design guidelines and criteria. Earthquake, research and administrative activities for the rehabilitation of existing buildings have been accelerated in Turkey in all aspects. New assessment techniques, experimentally verified new retrofitting techniques, new re-design procedures have been developed (Karadogan, 2009). New Earthquake Resistant Design Code (1997) becomes effective first and it has been updated depending on new experimental and theoretical findings in 2007. Shear walls are commonly used in RC framed buildings to resist lateral earthquake loads, , whereas, steel bracing is the most often used in steel structures. In the past two decades, a number of reports have also indicated the effective use of steel bracing in RC frames. Steel bracing of RC buildings started as a retrofitting measure to strengthen earthquake-damaged buildings or to increase the load resisting capacity of existing buildings. The bracing methods adopted in the past fall into two main categories, namely (i) external bracing and (ii) internal bracing. It is quite a long time known that steel bracing has important contribution to the lateral strength and ductility of both RC and steel frames. In addition to concentric bracings placed in between the beam and column connections there are several other bracing configurations found in literature. In Japanese practice another closed frame braced by diagonals are placed in an RC frame by shear studs and connected to peripheral elements in a continuous way. Most of the ordinary RC buildings have an important common deficiency which is the lack of proper detailing in the zones of beam-column connections. This future should be kept in mind if cost effective retrofitting technique is going to be proposed for ordinary RC buildings. Therefore knee bracing which are activating the sections where the strength has not been exploited yet either by vertical and horizontal loads becomes very interesting. The assessment and rehabilitation works already carried out indicates that the low–cost, low–rise RC buildings have more or less similar deficiencies. Among the common structural deficiencies one can count the beam–column connections which have not been constructed very well and hence they are most critical regions of the structural systems, the lack of lateral rigidity and the structural alterations done in improper ways etc. Beam – column connections and their close vicinities which are generally weak in unengineered buildings were not used but the sections which are not stressed both by vertical or lateral loads. The basic philosophy behind the RC specimens strengthened by different configurations of steel diagonals is to create more sections with reserved capacity either on existing rc elements or in steel elements to dissipate more energy imparted to the structure by seismic excitation, (Taskin, 2010). The steel diagonals are not blocking totally the flexural behavior of individual RC elements in the inelastic excursions and they can be mounted or renewed very easily if they experience excessive plastic deformations during severe displacement reversals. Sekiguchi, I.(1988), Badoux, M. andJirsa, O. (1990), Bush ,T.D., Jones, E.A. and Jirsa, J.O.(1991) focussed on the retrofit¬ting of steel bracing and studied the type of external bracing of buildings. They use internal indirect bracing to increase the lateral load capacity of RC buildings by configuring on individual bays of the RC frames . Maheri and Sahabi(1996), use of steel bracing in concrete-framed structures to to determine the degree of effectiveness of different diag¬onal bracing arrangements to increase the in-plane shear strength of the concrete frame and to observe the relative behaviour of tension and compression braces. Mofid and Khosravi(1999), studied a new structural bracing system called the Disposable Knee Bracing . They proposed a special form of diagonal brace connected to a knee element instead of beam-column joint. Maheri, Kousari and Razazan(2003) conducted pushover experiments on scaled models of ductile RC frames, directly braced by steel X and knee braces are tested . As a result, knee bracing system increases the lateral load capacity and the ductility of RC frame. It is concluded that both X-bracing and knee-bracing systems may be used to design or retrofit for a damage-level earthquake. In the external bracing system, existing buildings are retrofitted by attaching a local or global steel bracing system to the exterior frames. In the internal bracing method, the buildings are retrofitted by incorporating a bracing system inside the individual bays of the RC frames. The bracing may be attached to the RC frame either indirectly or directly. In the indirect internal bracing, a braced steel frame is positioned inside the RC frame. As a result, the transfer of load between the steel bracing and the concrete frame is achieved indirectly through the steel frame. In some retrofitting cases, provision of the steel frame may be necessary to reduce the strength demand on an already damaged and weakened RC frame, in other instances the steel frame acts only as a costly connecting mechanism. An alternative method is presented here in to utilize the non-linear behaviour of a new structural bracing system called the “Disposable Knee Bracing”. In this framing system, a special form of diagonal brace connected to a knee element instead of beam-column joint, is proposed. The diagonal elements provide effective lateral stiffness, sufficient ductility and small storey drift for moderate design earthquake. The knee elements are designed to have plastified regions for dissipation of the energy caused by strong earthquake. The simple technique proposed has several important differences than the other traditional techniques such as adding shear walls or converting the non strucrtural partioning walls to structural walls etc. It does not cause severe changes in the lateral rigidity of the original building like shear wall intervention or modification to shear walls do. It is clear that the decrement in fundamental period of building will cause generally increment in the earthquake forces to be imparted to the building. It means that the problem is being amplified first prior the solution. It becomes a serious problem to transfer the shear forces and overturning moments attracted by shear walls to the soil through the foundation .One of the other difficulty inherently exist in the traditional techniques mentioned above is the substantional changes in the structural behavior of newly introduced dual system which will consist of existing frame elements and the integrated shear walls. As it is known it is hard to estimate the internal force distributions if there exist dual systems simply because of the interaction of flexural type deformation of shear walls and shear type deformation of frames. This may cause stress concentrations in some of the existing critical sections which may need improvements. In order to propose an alternative to overcome those expected difficulties light steel bracing configurations are proposed to activate the sections still have reserve flexural and shear capacities. In this article the responses of nine 1:3 scaled specimens braced by six different type of bracing configurations have been subjected to displacement reversals together with a reference frame to see the effectiveness of the proposed bracing system. One of the specimens was corner to corner diagonally braced system and the rest of them were different kind of knee element combinations. They have been designed to consume energy in flexural deformations. Buckingham’s pi- theorem was referred to scale down the specimens from prototype. The experimentally achieved results were theoretically obtained through non-linear analysis and the proposed strengthening technique were used to retrofit a five storey RC structure which is also strengthened by means of other retrofitting techniques. All kinds of light steel bracing configurations are increasing the lateral load capacity and are decreasing the storey drift. Concentric bracing which are placed in between the most vulnerable zones of the structures is not preferred as much as the other knee braced configurations proposed. Energy dissipating capacities, damping ratios drift ratios and fundamental periods found for each specimen are all compared with the corresponding response of bare frame specimen. The thicker the bracing system the more the lateral load capacity has been reached. Also the more redundancy and more deformable elements the more energy consumption and more hysteretic damping ratios have been determined. One of the important aspects of retrofitting by light steel bracing configurations is to minimize the changes on the structural characteristics of the existing systems. Pushover analysis indicates that if the knee braces are not only used in the strengthened span of the structure but partially in the adjacent spans also protects the early failure of the columns. Higher lateral load capacities and overall displacement ductilities are reached when this retrofitting technique is used. Similar equivalent responses have been obtained for three and four sided bracings systems in the plan and this is one of the advantages of this technique by doing that the others. No drastic changes should be expected in the vibrational characteristics of the original structure and hence in the amount of earthquake forces to be imparted to the structure.
