It has long been recognized that spatial heterogeneity in rock properties such as permeability and porosity has a strong influence on the production performance of reservoirs. Therefore, characterization of these rock property fields is essential to make reliable performance predictions. It is known from the literature study that heterogeneity in rock properties in lateral direction generally was resolved well from the conventional pressure transient test data. However, heterogeneity in rock properties in vertical direction cannot be resolved from the conventional pressure transient test data. In recent years, a new generation multi-probe and dual packer-probe wireline formation tester was introduced. It is an important alternative to the conventional pressure transient test due to many advantages. Protection of the environmental problems (production to surface), shorter testing time and opportunity to conduct vertical interference test along the wellbore are main advantages of the wireline formation tests over the conventional pressure transient test. It is known that spatial pressure data sets of the wireline formation test contain information about heterogeneity in rock properties in both lateral and vertical directions. However, there is no detailed study in the literature, which examines to what degree heterogeneity in permeability and porosity can be resolved from spatial pressure transients acquired by multi-probe and dual- packer/probe testers. Thus, in this study, the problem of determining heterogeneity in rock properties from such tests was investigated in detail. Two different approaches were considered for modeling heterogeneity. In one approach, heterogeneity was modeled by assuming that each layer consists of zones having different rock and fluid properties, while in the second approach, heterogeneity is modeled in gridblock scale, by using geostatistics which allows the properties to be treated as randomized regional variables with certain correlation structures. Permeability and porosity fields conditional to vertical interference pressure data sets are estimated by using the inverse problem methodology based on Bayesian probability theorem. In recent years, several studies have shown that this inverse problem methodology is quite powerful and effective in generating rock property fields conditional to both direct (e.g., porosity and permeability data obtained from logs, their spatial structure determined from geostatistical analysis) and indirect/dynamic measurements like pressure transient data. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) r-6-z single-phase fully implicit, finite difference simulator for a vertical well has been developed to simulate pressure transient data acquired from vertical interference tests. In this simulator both block xxu centered and point centered grid system were considered. The simulator was extensively verified by comparing its results with analytical solutions given in the literature and with the results of commercial simulator ECLIPSE 100, for a variety of cases. In all instances, the comparison between our simulator, ECLIPSE 100, and analytical solution was quite good. Non-linear parameter estimation capability based on this inverse problem theory has been integrated into this 3-D simulator to solve non-linear parameter estimation problem. Non-linear parameter estimation is achieved by using the well-known gradient-based Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The use of three different methods (finite difference, gradient simulator, and adjoint) for efficiently computing sensitivities coefficients required in the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm have be investigated, and formulas based on both gradient simulator and adjoint methods for computing sensitivity coefficients are provided. The derivations of those sensitivity equations are original and not presented in the literature. These methods were compared in terms of computation time for different situations. The sensitivity coefficients which can be generated by these procedures include the sensitivity of packer and observation probe pressures to simulator gridblock permeabilities, porosities, skin factors, wellbore storage coefficients and initial wellbore and formation pressures for homogenous and heterogeneous systems. Moreover, sensitivity of packer and observation probe pressures to simulator gridblock permeabilities, porosities were drawn to understand the sensitive zones of the formation in detail. The sensitivity plots of the packer pressure to horizontal permeabilities of gridblocks in the reservoir show that the most sensitive zone is just across to packer interval. Moreover, the horizontal permeabilities of the gridblocks in the upper and lower part of the packer interval boundaries are not sensitive to packer pressure. However, the sensitive zone of the packer pressure to vertical permeability is the gridblocks at the boundaries in the packer interval. At early times, the sensitive zone of the packer pressure to porosity is limited to just across to packer interval, but in late times, becomes larger and moves in lateral and vertical directions. The sensitivity maps of the observation probe pressure to horizontal and vertical permeabilities were also drawn for single and multilayer cross-flow system at different times. It is shown that the most sensitive zone of the probe pressure to horizontal permeabilities is the gridblocks between upper boundary of the packer interval and observation probe. Likewise, similar behavior was found for the sensitivity of the probe pressure to vertical permeabilities. Additionally, probe pressure is also sensitive to vertical permeabilities of the gridblocks between probe and upper boundary of the layer. At early times, the sensitive zone of the probe pressure to porosity is limited to gridblocks between probe and the upper boundary of the packer interval, at late times; it becomes larger and moves in lateral and vertical directions. As mentioned previously, in this work, heterogeneity in rock properties can modeled by considering that each layer consists of N different zones having different properties for each. This type of model is well suited for studying the influence of an invaded zone or zones adjacent to wellbore due to mud invasion on the pressure transients acquired by multi-probe and packer-probe tests. As is well known, when an xxin oil/gas well is drilled, some of the borehole fluid (mud filtrate) can invade the formation, displacing the native reservoir fluid and creating an invaded zone around the wellbore. The invading fluid usually has a viscosity and compressibility that differ those of the formation fluid, whether an oil or water based mud is used. A synthetic example of multi-probe test is presented to confirm the theory and procedures developed in this work. This example showed that simultaneous matching of horizontal and vertical probe pressures, it is sufficient to estimate invaded and uninvaded zone properties. However, simultaneous matching of the just vertical observation probe pressures can only yield estimation of the uninvaded zone properties. A detailed investigation on estimating and resolving permeability and porosity fields in both vertical and lateral directions from pressure data sets acquired from vertical interference tests has been conducted. Results indicate that pressure transient data from vertical interference tests are helpful for resolving the permeability as well as porosity heterogeneity, particularly in the horizontal and vertical directions where we have pressure measurements along the wellbore. Moreover, packer and probe pressures are sensitive to the formation properties at different regions. It was shown that simultaneous usage of the packer and probe pressures provides to resolve the properties of the formation in a larger region. By using the methodology developed in this work, four synthetic applications and one field packer-probe test example demonstrated the determination of the permeabilty and porosity values from vertical interference test data.
