During last two decades enormous efforts were devoted to the investigation of inverse scattering problems whose aim is to recover the geometrical (location and shape) as well as the physical (constitutive parameters) properties of an inaccessible body by considering its effect on the propagation of certain wave (electromagnetic, acoustic, etc.). These high interest to the subject proceeds mainly from its existent as well as potential applications in medicine, geophysics, telecommunications, etc. The inaccessible body which has to be recovered can be located either in an infinite known medium (empty space, for example) or in a known host medium whose constitutive parameters differ from those of the surrounding infinite medium. To the best of our knowledge almost all of the available publications on the subject concern the first case while the second one is also extremely important from both theoretical and practical points of view. The aim of this work is to start the investigations concerning the second case by considering a model problem in which the host medium consists of an infinite layer composed of a certain known simple material while the unknown body, say D, has a cylindrical geometry such that the problem is two dimensional A6 we shall see later, owing to the reflections from two sides of the layer, the body d undergoes in the spectral domain interactions with four waves propagating in four different directions, which makes the problem very interesting from both mathematical and physical points of view. Notice that in problems where d is located in an infinite simple medium or buried in a simple half-space, the body D interacts only with one wave, which makes the problem much more simple and easy. The geometry of the problem is shown in Fig-1*. The cylindrical body d, which can be composed of several disjoint parts, is supposed to be parallel to the axis o*3. The intersection of d with the plane ox,xa consists of the region B which can be a no n- connected plane region. It is also supposed that the permitivity e(x) and the conductivity o{x) of d are scalar functions of the coordinates x, and x, while its permeability is equal to that of the space, say u.. -V- The constitutive parameters of the layer which occupies the region -d<x»o and *2<-d are scaler constants as indicated in Fig - 1*. Then the problem consists of finding the functions e(x) and a{x) by using the data obtained through electromagnetic field measurements performed on a certain "data line" (cylindrical surface !) L The field is supposed to be excited by an incident linearly polarized monochromatic plane wave whose electrical component is parallel to the cylinder D, namely ; f=(o,o,u*(x)) with(** İr -v tt#f*,e»«»**«»m») u (x) - e * ' a) the case of e 0 Figure 1* *) We do not use any special notation in order to indicate vectors. The cartesian coordinates of a vector are shown by the subscripts 1 and 2. For example x-|*i.*.) -VI- The data manifold ı we shall consider in this work is either very large circle (-M on which we get the far field data or two parallel straight- lines 1-£*1. In order to solve the problem easily, we write the total field u(x) as the sum of two terms, namely ; u(x) = u"(x) + uc(x) where ujx) stands for the total field which should be observed if the body D were absent. Then the second term u,(x) is the effect of the body and satisfies the equation AuD+k2[x2)uD(x)/u0(x)] (*2) From which we conclude that 0 if we are interested only in the location and the shape of D, then the exact solution will be given through the function eo(x), the errors due to numerical computations are ignored. -vn- «) if the interaction between the material composing D and the wave is "sufficiently" weak, such that the Born Approximation | uD(_x) / u0(x) |« 1, xeB is legitimate, then (*2) gives u)(x) M v(x). In this case the function «>(x) enables us to recover the permitivity e(x) and conductivity o[x) also. In order to establish a relation between the functions
