In this work, the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in a prestressed thin viscoelastic and elastic tubes filled with an incompressible inviscid fluid is studied. In Chapter one, the historical evolution of the subject and some theoretical works in the existing literature on this area are presented. In second Chapter, the nonlinear field equations that we need in studying the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in fluid filled viscoelastic and elastic tubes are obtained. The perturbation methods that we shall utilize in this work is briefly discussed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, employing the reductive perturbation method, the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in viscoelastic and elastic tubes, filled with an inviscid fluid, is studied. Depending on the balance between the nonlinearity, dispersion and/or dissipation, the evolution equations are obtained as Burgers, Korteweg-de Vries and Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equations. A progressive wave type of solution to these equations is sought and the numerical analysis of them is also given in the same chapter. In Chapter 5, two different problems have been investigated. In the first place, the amplitude modulation of weakly nonlinear waves in a fluid filled viscoelastic tube is examined for weak dissipation but strong dispersion and the dissipative nonlinear Schrödinger equation is obtained and the numerical solution of this evolution equation is given under some initial conditions. In the second part we studied the same problem by disregarding the viscoelastic effects but taking the axial displacement into account and obtained two nonlinear Schrödinger equations associated with the axial and radial motions of the elastic tube. The variations of some coefficients with wave number and initial deformation are investigated numerically and the results are depicted on some graphs. Finally in Chapter 6, the nonlinear interaction of waves propagating with different wave numbers are investigated and two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations are obtained. Basic equations In the present work, two separate problems will be investigated. In the first case, the viscoelastic effects of the tube material is taken into account, but due to tethering effects, the axial motion is neglected. It is assumed that the balance of forces in the axial direction is provided by the tethering force T. In second case, the viscoelastic effects of the tube material are neglected, and axial displacement components are taken into account. The nonlinear equations of motions for both cases can be given as follows Nonlinear equations of viscoelastic tube : d2u Ea _ J_ d {Y.X au^ l, dt2 + A2e ~ A9 d /En., Ndu m o"u 1j2 LO /2Ji ou\ Po+p = Â7â^ + A|-Â7â;vÂ^âJ> (1) m d /Eı\...du where u is the radial displacement, p is the inner pressure, Sı, S2 are the mambrane forces in the axial and circumferential directions, A and A$ are the xii stretches in the related directions. Nonlinear equations of elastic tube: d ( 1 \. au..," aw. Here E is the strain energy density function, w is the axial displacement, ar and az are the accelaration components in the radial and axial directions. Assuming that the strain energy density function E is analytic in Ağ and A2, we may expand it into a power series around u = 0, aw/az = 0 and au/az = 0. If these expansions are substituted into equations (1), (3) and (4) we obtain the nonlinear equations of motion of viscoelastic and elastic tubes in terms of radial and axial displacements and its derivatives. Equations of fluid : The equations given above are to be supplemented by the equations governing the fluid body. The approximate equations of motion for incompressible and non-Newtonian fluid may be given as follows au n au, av,av av +ap Weak Nonlinear Waves In this part, the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in the long wave approximation for viscoelastic and elastic tubes will be investigated separately. Tethered viscoelastic tubes : Using the equations (1) and (5) the propagation of small but finite amplitude waves in a dispersive and dissipative medium will be studied, in the long wave limit, through the use of reductive perturbation method. For this purpose we introduce the following stretched coordinates Z = ea(z-gt), r = ea+1gt (6) where e is a small parameter measuring the weakness of dispersion, nonlinearity and dissipation; a is a positive constant whose value will be determined later. We further assume that the field quantities can be represented by asymptotic series as oo oo oo u = £y«"(e,t), <; = J]eun(£,t), p=]Te>n(£,r) (7) n=l n=l n=l where un, un and pn are some unknown functions to be determined from the solution of the field equations. Introducing expansion (6) into eq. (7) and setting the like powers of e equal to zero we obtain the sets of differential equations. If we solve the 0(e) and 0(e2) order equations, we obtain the following master equation 9U TTaU 2a-ı&U a-id2U From this general evolution equation various well-known equations may be obtained as some special cases. i) f34 = 0(1) and a = 1 ; In this case the coefficient of d3U/d£3 is of the order of e and the evolution equation reduces to the Burgers' equations dU TTdU d2U n ^+7^-73^ = 0, (9) which results from the balance of non-linearity with dissipation. ii )B4 = 0(e) and a = 1/2 ; In this special case the coefficient of d2U/d£2 is of the order of e1'2 and the resulting evolution equation reduces to the well-known Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation dU TTdU d3U n ^ + 7^ + 72^ = 0, (10) which results from the balance of non-linearity with dispersion. Hi) Ba = 0(e1'2) and a = 1/2 : For this special case the evolution equation reduces to the following Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation dU TTdU d2U d3U n ^+71^-73^+72^ = 0, (11) which is obtained by balancing the non-linearity with dispersion and dissipation. Weakly tethered elastic tubes : In this case, the viscoelastic effects of the tube material will be neglected, but due to weak tethering effects, the axial displacement component will be taken into account. In this special case there is no dissipation. Linearizing the field equations (3), (4) and (5) and seeking a harmonic wave type of solution to these equations we obtaine the following dispersion relation (2 + mk2)mujA - [m((/?i - /30)k2 + maok4 + 27l(2 + mk2)k2]u2 + 27lp! - (30)k4 + a0k6} - (ai - /30)2k4 = 0, (12) where k is the wave number, w is the angular frequency. As is seen from this dispersion relation there are two waves associated with axial and radial xiv motions, propagating in the medium. Introducing the coordinate streching (6) for a = 1/2 and expansions (7) into equations (3), (4) and (5) and setting the like powers of e equal to zero we obtain the set of differential equations. From the solution of this set we obtain the following Korteweg-de Vries equation dU TTdU d3U n ^+xU^+crw=0- (13) This equation corresponds to two nonlinear equations associated with the axial and transverse motion of the tube material. Nonlinear Wave Modulation In this part, the amplitude modulation of weakly nonlinear waves in fluid filled viscoelastic tube and modulation of two waves associated with axial and transverse motion in fluid filled elastic tube are examined separately. Wave modulation in fluid filled viscoelastic tube : We employ the reductive perturbation method and introduce the following coordinate stretching Ç = e(z-\t), T = e2t. (14) Here e is a small parameter measuring the weakness of nonlinearity, A is a constant which will be shown to be the group velocity. We further assume that the field quantities are functions of fast variables (z,t) and also slow variables (£,t). Thus the following substitution is permissible: d d d d, d 2 d &-&+eâe ' a-eAâe+eV (15) We shall assume that the field variables are expressible as asymptotic series in e. We further assume that the dissipation is weak and the viscoelastic coefficients are of the following order in terms of e ft = Âe2. (16) Introducing the expansions (7) and (14) into the field eqs. (1) and (5) and setting the coefficients of like powers of e equal to zero we obtain set of differential equations. From the solution of this set we obtain the following dissipative nonlinear Schrödinger equation dU d2 U *ü- + ^i aw + M2 |tf |2c + mv = 0. (17) dr ' n± 0£ Wave modulation in fluid filled elastic tube : In the present work, employing the nonlinear equations of a prestressed thin elastic tube and the approximate equations of an incompressible inviscid fluid the amplitude modulation of these nonlinear equations for strongly xv dispersive case is investigated by use of the multiple scale expansion method. For this, we introduce the following coordinate stretching and derivative expansions: zn = enz, tn = ent, (n = 0,1,2,...), (18) 71=0 71 = 0 We shall assume that field quantities are functions of stretched coordinates. We further assume that field quantities are expressible as asymptotic series in e as follows oo oo u = '^2enun(z0,zu....;t0,ti,....), v = ^ envn(z0,zi,....; t0,ti,....) n=l n=l oo oo = ^2enwn(z0,z1,....;t0,t1,....), p= 5^enpR(«0,«ı,....; w 71 = 1 71=1 Introducing the expansions (19) and (20) into the field eqs. (3), (4) and (5) and setting the coefficients of like powers of e equal to zero we obtain set of differential equations. After solving these set of equations we obtain the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation dU d2U, l2 '- + ^â« + ^\U\2U = 0. (21) dr ' ^ d? This equation corresponds to two nonlinear equations associated with the axial and transverse motion of the tube material. Nonlinear Wave Interaction In this part, the nonlinear interaction of two acoustic waves propagating in an elastic tube filled with an inviscid fluid is studied by use of the multiple scale expansion method. We shall assume that field quantities are expressible as asymptotic series in terms of e. Introducing coordinates and derivative expansions into the fıld equations (3), (4) and (5) we obtain the set of diferential equation. If we solve this equations we obtain the following coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation dU FP U ijp+^-g^ + ^\U\2U + ^\U'\2U = 0 (22) r)TT' Ffl 11' i^+A^k+MU'fU + MufU^O. (23) It is not easy to solve these coupled nonlinear equations. The solution can be obtained only when there is a relation between the coefficients //2, /4> ^3? fj,'3. The nonlinear plane wave solutions to these equations are also given for some special cases.
