This thesis aims for the assessment of a solar water heating application for a university campus sport center by simulating a case study. The simulation has been made by using 3 different softwares: F-chart, TRNSYS and SAM. The main idea behind using 3 different softwares is to strengthen the analysis by using most popular and reliable softwares as there was no chance to do any experimental measurements during the thesis study. F-chart, TRNSYS and SAM softwares have been introduced and the capabilities of the softwares have been presented and detailed user manuals have been given at the appendix. In order to provide a strong base for the analysis, real energy consumption data has been obtained from the university authorities and aimed to be used as input values for the software modellings. Since there is no water flow-meter on the cold water input line, the daily hot water need has been calculated by using real natural gas consumption and the technical specification of the current boiler system. The design of the solar hot water system is mainly based on an integration to the current heat pipe system. So, current equipments’ technical data has also been used to determine solar heating systems’ sizing. Due to the easiness of supply, “Vaillant Solar Systems VFK 125” model named flat plate collector is chosen as the solar water heating system. “Vaillant Solar Systems VFK 125”s technical document has also given at the appendix. According to software analysis outputs, it is seen that solar hot water system which contains 46 Vaillant Solar Systems VFK 125 collector is the most cost effective one while above the 50 ea of collectors, solar water heating system has no economic advantage even solar fraction values are being increased. Furthermore, system is able to produce 50,9 – 52,4% of average annual solar fraction with a payback period of 6.6 years. It is also seen that output of each software is in the similar value range and supports each other. And finally, in order to provide a visual imagery of the system, by using “Sketchup” software and “Skelion” plugin, different angle of views has been given according to real world geometrical data. Consequently, the assessment of solar water heating application for a university campus has been performed based on a case study of Istanbul Technical University Ayazaga Campus’s sport center. The obtained approximate values of 3 widely used software has increased the reliability of the assessment. It is seen that a solar water heating system investment of the need of 50-52% of hot water energy can be provided by solar energy with an average pay back time. According to real consumption values, in summer, while the solar energy rates are the highest, because of the university is out of education terms, usage rate of the sports center is low. Thus, this may cause to reduce performance of the solar water heating system. On the other hand, during the examination of the current roof, it is also seen that the current roof system’s carrying capacity will not be appropriate for such a solar water heating system. The main aim for this thesis let us to neglect this extra cost item at this point of assessment. It is mainly aimed to increase solar energy field of application with this thesis. For further studies, alternative solutions can be applied in order to increase the efficiency of the solar water heating system. For example, hot water needs of near places, such as cafeteria or dormitory, can be collectively supplied by a one bigger scaled (central) solar water heating system. It should be taken into consideration that for further studies, real time consumption data would be also very crucial.
