World population dramatically rises and accordingly energy requirements and the standard of life also increase more rapidly. As a result, the difference between the energy demand and supply rapidly increases by time. The energy demand is supplied by two main sources. Coal, oil, and natural gas etc. can be mentioned among the first sources.  Since, he fossil energy producibility depends on mass combustion, these sources cause soil, water, and air pollution, and therefore,  they are called as unclean sources and lead to the greenhouse gases emissions, which  cause to global climate change. According to the last IPCC report, greenhouse gases cause 99% of global climate change. Therefore, such sources are accounted among unsustainable energy types. Furthermore, their reservoirs are limited, and renewability of them takes millions years, therefore they are mentioned as exhaustible sources.  On the other hand, the second type includes solar, wind, hydraulic, hydrogen, biomass, and geothermal, etc., which are known as clean, inexhaustible, and sustainable energy sources. Turkey is one of the countries with high hydroelectric energy potential, but today only 35% of this potential is functional. This is due to its geographic position at subtropical climate region with upstream of Euphrates–Tigris Basin.  Today, 97% of the world sustainable energy production is based on the hydraulic energy. Hence, the hydroelectric energy takes place at the top of such clean, inexhaustible, and sustainable energy sources. Therefore, realistic determination of the gross hydropower potential is very important. For realistic calculation of the hydroelectric energy refined methods are meeded for better reliable results that are more than the previous ones that are available in open literature. There are many published works, but herein two of them are considered for the comparison purpose with the newly proposed one in this thesis. These are well-known Hypsographic Curves (HC) and Drawdown-Flow (DF) methods and they are frequently used in practices. According to the HC method, first, weighted average elevation is calculated for a river basin and then discharge and elevation values are used for hydropower potential calculation. It is preferred over the other approach due to its simplicity and applicability in the poorly gauged basins. However, it gives approximate results. The DF method calculates power potential as the multiplication of the specific weight by the elevation difference and the arithmetic average discharge at two points. This method gives more precise results than the first one. However, he flow variation between the two stations is accepted as linear. This assumption appears to contradict with the real (physical) relationships between the flow and the area (which is linear) and between the flow and distance (which is parabolic). Furthermore, theSE two methods cannot show hydropower potential location simultaneously with second or higher degree stream's on a single scheme. This means that  the methods have less visual ability. On the other hand, the two mentioned methods give opportunity to calculate, theoretical gross power producible between two points only, but the points between them cannot be considered.  Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is used for the same goal in the last decades. The GIS software is based on the DF method. It has also applicability to poorly gauged basins. However, the software uses flow data obtained directly from the rainfall instead of the flow measurements directly from stations. As well-known, the physical relationship between the rainfall and flow is very complex issue. Therefore, this method has not reliable applicability for precise calculation. Furthermore, it requires expensive commercial software, maps, and satellite images, besides application of GIS is today expensive and limited. The methods used for determination of the gross hydropower potential in any basin should have more precise and visual ability; should be able to calculate continuously through the main river as well as the along its tributaries, and its application should be general, cheaper and easier to use Under the above-mentioned considerations, the refined hydropower calculations for practical studies are necessary, which is the purpose of this thesis. An effective method, namely, energy tree (ET) is introduced with its application to data sets from Murat River a branch of the Euphrates River at the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. Also Murat, Upper Euphrates, Çoruh, Kızılırmak and Hudson river basins are selected for the application of the new method. Murat River is located at the east of Turkey and it has about 250.76 m3/s mean flow. Inflow and outflow altitudes are 1,552 and 859 m above mean sea level, respectively. This means that Murat River basin has high hydropower potential. In this basin the flow data are obtained from the stations, namely, E21A002, E21A052, E21A022, E21A064, E21A057, E21A058, and E21A077. E21A002, E21A052, and E21A022 are established on the main channel of Murat River, whereas the rest; (E21A064, E21A057, E21A058, and E21A077) are established on the branches that are Goynuk, Karasu, Bingol, and Hınıs Streams, respectively. All stations are operated by Turkish General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI). Annual mean flow values are used as data for this study. Coruh river basin is located on northeastern corner of Turkey and it has six measurement stations, E23A004, E23A020, E23A016, E23A005, E23A022, and E23A015, on the main channel of Coruh River from upstream to downstream. The last station, E23A015, collects the flow from the basin area of 19,654 km2. The first station at the upstream is E23A004 with its altitude of 1,545 m above mean sea level. The Coruh River discharges to the Black Sea.  Kizilirmak river basin is located on central northern part of Turkey. There are seven stations with annual flow measurements on the main channel. These stations are labelled as E15A039, E15A001, E15A032, E15A003, E15A028, E15A036, and E15A033 from upstream to downstream. In total, the basin area at the last station, E15A033, is about 75,120 km2 and after this station the river discharges to the Black Sea. E15A039 is the first station with altitude of 1,298 m above mean sea level. The Hudson River watershed has two main branches; namely, the Upper Hudson River and the Mohawk River. There are five stations with annual flow measurements on the main channel of Upper Hudson River. These stations are 01331095, 01327750, 01318500, 01315500, and 01312000 from downstream to upstream in respective order. The proposed method aims to combine the advantages and remove the weaknesses of the two above criticized methods that are available in the current literature, namely, hypsographic curves (HC) and the drawdown–flow (DF). In the calculations, it becomes necessary to consider empirical elevation-discharge and elevation-area relationships in the forms of mathematical power functions according to geomorphological structure of the streams. These functions help to calculate the discharge at any point within the drainage basin provided that the elevation is given for any desired point. When the application results are considered collectively, it is possible to conclude that ET yields more energy and it is also more robust than HC and DF methods. The main ramification in the application of the ET method is to consider the non-linear relationship between the elevation and discharge in the drainage basin. In another word, the method considers both the horizontal (flow-area) and vertical (flow-elevation) flow variations for the consecutive two stations and for any two points between them, which makes the method more precise. Furthermore, the method gives possibility to see the gross potential variation in horizontal and vertical directions. This means that the method has more visual ability than the others do.  In order to see calculation capability of ET for the basins with insufficient station number, it is applied to synthetically generated data. As the results, it is possible to say that ET yields more refined and physically plausible results in spite of insufficient station number. ET determines the gross power potential not only at two stations, but also at the points replaced between these two stations. Probability plot correlation coefficient (PPCC) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) are used in order to select the best fitting distribution of the flow data observed at each station in the basins. The tests show that the best distribution for the data is log-normal function for Murat River, therefore for the stations, which have insufficient data number, the data are synthetically generated by using this function in addition to Markov chain, and wavelet techniques. The statistical magnitudes (mean, standard deviation, coefficient of skewness, and coefficient of variance etc.) for each station are calculated by using the synthetic data. These statistics are then used to generate the best, the average, and the worst scenarios for better flow forecast.  The hypsographic curves, drawdown-flow, and energy tree methodologies are applied to the real and the synthetic flow data and the results are compared with each other. The comparison showed that the energy tree yields results that are more reliable and sensitive. So the new method can be used without any hesitation for determining the gross hydropower potential in any basin. The thesis contains seven chapters. In the introduction chapter, the subject confines to Turkey energy policy, the potential, the goal, the importance, and the limitations of the study. In the second chapter, literature review is presented with investigations containing the discussion of the published works on both gross hydroelectric calculation and synthetic series generation techniques. In the third chapter, description of the study area is presented. The flow observation stations, climate characteristics of the basin like temperature and precipitation, and hydroelectric plants established in the study area are introduced.  The climate change and its effects on the Murat River is investigated in the same chapter.  The data analyses are detailed in the following chapter, which includes probability distribution functions (i.e. normal, lognormal, gamma, and generalized extreme values); fitting tests (i.e. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and probability plot correlation coefficients), and synthetic series generation methods (i.e. log-normal, Markov chains and wavelet). Hence, in the chapter the key points are determined for applying the mentioned methods (ET, HC, and DF). In the fifth chapter, the methodology and previous methods are presented. The next chapter presents the application of the methods. In the last chapter, the results are discussed, The results are compared with each other and the weaknesses and strengths of the methods are reported. Finally, several important suggestions are offered to help the development of water resources management as the easy guide for such scientific studies.
