Dijital destekli mekanlarla ilgili kavramlar üç filmde ele alınır: Pierre-Paul Renders’ın Thomas in Love’ı (2000), Andy ve Larry Wachowski’nin The Matrix’i (1999) ve Stanley Kubrick’in 2001: A Space Odyssey’i (1968). Mimari mekanın “öteki”si olan dijital destekli mekanların incelenmesi dijital çağda mimari mekanın tanımlanması ile sonuçlandırılır.
The epistemological change in architecture due to the technological transformation in the late twentieth century gives architects the tools to define space. In this study, the conception of architectural space is examined focusing on the shifting concepts of space that come into being as a result of digitally supported spaces generated by digital technologies. A framework that allows a critical outlook into the subject of contemporary space is created through the “other” spaces. New spatial concepts concerning digitally supported spaces are discussed to frame the conception of space. The digitally supported spaces studied as the “other” of architectural space in this thesis are cyberspace, hyperspace and exospace. Cyberspace is the digitally supported information space of the Internet in a computer. It is an environment of connected computer networks. Hyperspace is a digitally supported graphic or semi-graphic space simulated by computers and virtual reality systems. Through the three-dimensional graphics of a virtual reality system, a sense of immersion is created with the response of the system to user actions in real-time. Exospace is a digitally supported extraterrestrial space designed for living beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Today man not only visits outerspace but also can live in the International Space Station, a significant experiment in exospace design. With a critical gaze at the existing norms of architecture, science fiction films create new horizons in terms of space and time. As a means of spatial representation, cinema is used as a discussion medium in this study to uncover digitally supported spaces and to improve the analysis of the new spatial concepts. The concepts concerning digitally supported spaces are unfolded through three major films: Pierre-Paul Renders’ Thomas in Love (2000), Andy and Larry Wachowski’s The Matrix (1999) and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The analysis of digitally supported spaces as the “other” of architectural space is concluded with the definition of architectural space in the digital age.
