Abstract
In this study, the usability, durability and the possibility of prolonging the physical (utility) lives of Karpaz, Meluşa and Buri stones, used under Cyprus conditions, were researched. The study was conducted in three phases: 1. Determination of the characteristics of the stone samples taken from the quarries; 2. Conversion of wetting-drying, freezing-thawing of stones’ durability, proving their resistance to acid solutions, UV and salt crystallization via resistance tests; and 3. Reinforcement studies conducted via chemical applications and the evaluation of effectiveness of chemicals as a result of aging tests. The stones obtained from the quarries are applied protective chemical (P1) and strengthening + protective chemical (P2), immersion method for 15 minutes and a polymerization period of four weeks were applied for each stone. As a result, the samples of Karpaz Stone, Meluşa Stone and Buri Stone taken from the quarries were determined to be limestone and were exposed to physical deformation and chemical decomposition as a consequence of air pollution and atmospheric effects. With application of chemicals, their water absorption rates were found to decrease by 90%, unit masses to increase by 1-2%, their ultrasound speeds to increase by approximately 5-10% and their pressure resistance was found to increase by 20-25%. Furthermore, the samples applied with chemicals were observed to get less effected from the aging tests compared to those not applied with chemicals.
