Abstract

The internal spaces of the Byzantine churches have always been used as backgrounds for full pictorial cycles. There is a reciprocally binding interaction between the architecture and the pictorial cycles especially in the naos and the other related spaces. Sometimes the structural needs determined the dimensions and even the contents of the pictorial cycles, but often the opposite was true and paintings determined structure. In this context the Annunciation scene which is one of the most important messages of Christian religion establishes a close connection with the church architecture. The major protagonists of this scene are Mary and Gabriel. The two figures are in the same scene but on the other hand they belong to different spheres; here starts the challenge for the architect and the artist. The composition appeares, most frequently, in and around the bema, prothesis and the transition zones to the dome. The Annunciation is programmed in such a way that it considers liturgy, art and architecture alike. The possibilities of architecture and its determining possibilities have always been a great help to the artists’ achievement in pictorial programmes.
