Abstract

This paper presents an actuator driver design for a special magnetic actuator application. The actuator operates at 32 Hz and requires a sinusoidal current with the 12.32 mA RMS value during its operation. In order to reduce the power consumption and the total harmonic distortion, an amplitudeand-harmonic-control method is applied by developing a novel approach. A commercial 180 nm CMOS process design kit has been used in this design. Post-layout simulations show that the total power consumption of the actuator has been reduced from 30 mW to 19 mW. Total harmonic distortion has decreased from 48% to 27.44%. At the fundamental frequency, 32 Hz, the driver provides a current within the acceptable range of 11.5 mA and 13.5 mA, with an efficiency of 91.23%.
