Synthesis of N-allyl morpholine and its copolymers with sulfur dioxide and styrene

Abstract

The synthesis of N-allyl morpholine was performed by the Hofmann alkylation reaction of morpholine with allyl chloride. The structure of the monomer was elucidated by conventional spectroscopic methods and elemental microanalysis. Its homopolymerization gives only a viscous liquid with low yields in the presence of radical initiators. It can be copolymerized with SO2 in DMSO under atmospheric pressure to give an alternating copolymer. Its copolymerization with styrene in dioxane gives a random copolymer. The structures of the polymers were assigned by 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy.
