Abstract

Reactive power in the electrical network can be controlled by using shunt-reactors. Electromagnetic forces and power losses play a vital role in the designing of the shunt reactor. Due to the higher efficiency of the finite element method, reactors can be developed by using the finite element models prior to the experimental design of the reactor. The main aim of this work is to calculate the electromagnetic forces in the reactor. Finite element analysis was used to calculate the current, electromagnetic forces, magnetic flux, no-load losses, and load losses in the shunt reactor. Numerical calculation of the current, magnetic flux, no-load losses, and load losses are also compared with the experimental results.
