Abstract

In this study, the effect of pretreatment and thin (4-5 mm) anodic oxide films produced by AC and DC anodization in sulfuric acid and molybdate containing sulfuric acid on the corrosion properties of 6063 aluminium alloys was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and copper decoration technique were used for the investigation. Anodization pretreatments used in this study were caustic etching and desmutting in nitric acid solution. Increased caustic etching time caused decreased corrosion resistance of the surfaces while increased desmutting time increased corrosion resistance of the surfaces. Sulfuric acid AC anodized surfaces showed higher corrosion resistance than both sulfuric acid DA anodized and molybdate containing sulfuric acid AC anodized surfaces. It was determined that intermetallic particles and changes in their composition depending on surface pretreatment time on the surfaces played an important role on the decreased corrosion resistance of the both anodized and unanodized but pretreated surfaces.
