Abstract
In this study, the effect of low temperature nitriding on the corrosion and mechanical behaviours of AISI 304L, 316L and 316 Ti austenitic stainless steels was investigated. Nitriding was carried out at 400, 420 and 450 oC for 4, 6 and 10 hours in a fluidized bed type furnace containing Al2O3 powders as the gas carrier and 60 % ammonia + 40 % nitrogen gas mixtures as the nitriding media. After nitriding, corrosion and mechanical behaviours (tensile, bending, wear and fatigue) of nitrided stainless steels compare the that of untreated conditions and Rex 734 which is commonly used as orthopaedic implant material. The results showed that low temperature nitriding improved the surface properties and corrosion and mechanical behaviours of investigated austenitic stainless steels effectively.
