Abstract
Controlled/ living radical polymerizations enable the synthesis of well-defined polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions, and precisely controlled functionalities. One such controlled/ living polymerization is atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP provides a number of aspects necessary to produce materials of variety of compositions with complex yet predetermined architectures. In ATRP, an alkyl halide generates radicals by the continuous redox reaction provided by a transition metal complex. Methods to attach these groups to small molecules or polymers are numerous leading to a variety of structural motifs. Among these is the synthesis of star polymers from small molecules composed of multiple initiating species. In this work, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by CuCl/ PMDETA catalyst, in the initiation of trichlorocyanuric acid (trifunctional initiator) with the ATRP system was studied. The conversions were calculated from the gas chromatography (GC) and the molecular weights of the polymers were obtained from the Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Molecular weights were higher than the theoritical values. This may be attributed to some side reactions taken place at the early stages of polymerizations.
