Abstract

The first search for a heavy neutral spin-1 gauge boson (<a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:msup><a:mrow><a:mi>Z</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mo>′</a:mo></a:mrow></a:msup></a:mrow></a:math>) with nonuniversal fermion couplings produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to tau leptons or <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><c:mi>W</c:mi></c:math> bosons is presented. The analysis is performed using LHC data at <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><e:msqrt><e:mi>s</e:mi></e:msqrt><e:mo>=</e:mo><e:mn>13</e:mn><e:mtext> </e:mtext><e:mtext> </e:mtext><e:mi>TeV</e:mi></e:math>, collected from 2016 to 2018 with the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><g:mrow><g:mn>138</g:mn><g:mtext> </g:mtext><g:mtext> </g:mtext><g:msup><g:mrow><g:mi>fb</g:mi></g:mrow><g:mrow><g:mo>−</g:mo><g:mn>1</g:mn></g:mrow></g:msup></g:mrow></g:math>. The data are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits are set on the product of the cross section for production of the <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><i:mrow><i:msup><i:mrow><i:mi>Z</i:mi></i:mrow><i:mrow><i:mo>′</i:mo></i:mrow></i:msup></i:mrow></i:math> boson and its branching fraction to <k:math xmlns:k="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><k:mi>τ</k:mi><k:mi>τ</k:mi></k:math> or <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><m:mi>W</m:mi><m:mi>W</m:mi></m:math>. The presence of a <o:math xmlns:o="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><o:mrow><o:msup><o:mrow><o:mi>Z</o:mi></o:mrow><o:mrow><o:mo>′</o:mo></o:mrow></o:msup></o:mrow></o:math> boson decaying to <q:math xmlns:q="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><q:mrow><q:mrow><q:msup><q:mrow><q:mi>τ</q:mi></q:mrow><q:mrow><q:mo>+</q:mo></q:mrow></q:msup></q:mrow><q:mrow><q:msup><q:mrow><q:mi>τ</q:mi></q:mrow><q:mrow><q:mo>−</q:mo></q:mrow></q:msup></q:mrow></q:mrow></q:math> (<s:math xmlns:s="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><s:mrow><s:mrow><s:msup><s:mrow><s:mi>W</s:mi></s:mrow><s:mrow><s:mo>+</s:mo></s:mrow></s:msup></s:mrow><s:mrow><s:msup><s:mrow><s:mi>W</s:mi></s:mrow><s:mrow><s:mo>−</s:mo></s:mrow></s:msup></s:mrow></s:mrow></s:math>) is excluded for masses up to 2.45(1.60) TeV, depending on the <u:math xmlns:u="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><u:mrow><u:msup><u:mrow><u:mi>Z</u:mi></u:mrow><u:mrow><u:mo>′</u:mo></u:mrow></u:msup></u:mrow></u:math> boson coupling to standard model weak bosons, and assuming a <w:math xmlns:w="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><w:mrow><w:mrow><w:msup><w:mrow><w:mi>Z</w:mi></w:mrow><w:mrow><w:mo>′</w:mo></w:mrow></w:msup></w:mrow><w:mo stretchy="false">→</w:mo><w:mrow><w:msup><w:mrow><w:mi>τ</w:mi></w:mrow><w:mrow><w:mo>+</w:mo></w:mrow></w:msup></w:mrow><w:mrow><w:msup><w:mrow><w:mi>τ</w:mi></w:mrow><w:mrow><w:mo>−</w:mo></w:mrow></w:msup></w:mrow></w:mrow></w:math> (<z:math xmlns:z="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><z:mrow><z:mrow><z:msup><z:mrow><z:mi>W</z:mi></z:mrow><z:mrow><z:mo>+</z:mo></z:mrow></z:msup></z:mrow><z:mrow><z:msup><z:mrow><z:mi>W</z:mi></z:mrow><z:mrow><z:mo>−</z:mo></z:mrow></z:msup></z:mrow></z:mrow></z:math>) branching fraction of 50%.
