Abstract

Production wastewater is formed during the production of oil and natural gas and comes to the surface with the pumping of oil and natural gas from the underground. Production wastewater is a type of wastewater that contains many organic and inorganic compounds and therefore must be properly treated before discharge. Physical, chemical and/or biological methods are used in the treatment of production wastewater. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the biological treatability of oil and natural gas production wastewaters. In this context, oil and natural gas production and production wastewater obtained only from natural gas production sites were treated in the sequential batch reactor (AKR) system. Due to the high salinity content of the wastewater taken from the natural gas production site, it has been observed that its biological treatability is at a low level. In the production wastewater taken from the oil and natural gas production site, the average COD removal efficiency reached 68%. The inert fractions of oil and natural gas production wastewater that cannot be treated biologically were also determined within the scope of the study. It has been determined that there is 86% biodegradable COD content in the production wastewater and the rest is inert particulate and inert dissolved COD. Determination of inert characterization and biological treatability in production wastewater is very important in terms of guiding the selection of the most appropriate treatment process.
