Evaluation and Optimization of the Treatment Scheme for the Paint Industry Effluents Using Multi-criteria Decision Theory

Abstract

The study was evaluated and optimized the wastewater management for a paint industry. For this purpose, an in-plant survey identified individual waste streams for different processes and characterization and treatability studies were conducted on these segregated waste streams. The resulting treatment scheme involved ten different technical alternatives related to the operational conditions. An evaluation was performed using a multiple-criteria decision tool by analyzing physical footprint and performance of the treatment, chemicals used, the sludge produced, the energy consumed, which defined a sustainable wastewater management involving the optimal treatment configuration.
