Abstract
Maleimide and its N-substituted derivatives are 1,2-disubstituted ethylenes. Alternating copolymers of maleimide and styrene which are synthesized by free radical copolymerization show excellent thermal stability. It is well known that poly(maleimide) is a potential heat and chemical resistant material, so maleimide is widely used as a comonomer for modified polymeric systems. The bulkiness of N-substituents in functional maleimide prevents molecular motion of the main chain and can raise the glass transition temperatures (Tg). In this study, N-substituted maleimide having ATRP functional bromine moiety was copolymerized with styrene giving an alternating copolymer (as a macroinitiator) and grafted with MMA to obtain heat resistant graft copolymers. GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography) measurements showed that the polydispersity of the obtained graft copolymers decreased so, well-defined high Tg graft copolymers were obtained.
