Abstract

Geomagnetically Induced Currents are the ground signatures of the geomagnetic activity in the magnetosphere. Currents from the magnetosphere are damaging and can cause countries large economic losses. Understanding the nature of GICs, their variability, and their cause can help us to deal with their adverse effects which are crucially important, especially during the increasing phase of the current solar activity. In this study, we make use of the magnetic field measurements in İznik (40.43°N, 29.72°E), Türkiye to address the variations and causes of the GICs as seen at our latitudes. Both case studies and statistical analyses have been carried out. 36 magnetic storm events in three years from 2013 to 2015 were studied to determine the GICs. Electric field measurements at a close location (Bozcaada) were also used to support the geomagnetic field data. We show that the GICs at our latitudes are seen most and almost equally during the main and recovery phase of the magnetic storms. While GICs during main phase are understandable, recovery phase GICs need further investigation as to the source of the GICs at our latitudes. Solar wind connection has been investigated using the case studies and shown that the high dynamic pressure and southward IMFs are found to be associated with these events. In this presentation, we will emphasize on the relation of the GIC events to the phase of the geomagnetic storms and discuss the possible physical causes.
