Abstract
Abstract The effect of growth velocity R, silicon volume fraction V f , and interparticle spacing λ on the hardness and tensile properties of directionally solidified AlSi alloys have been examined. The relationship between hardness and growth velocity in various silicon morphologies is defined and shown to be of the same form as that for yield strength. It was found that, as a result of a high silicon volume fraction, the hardness value in complex regular crystals is almost 30%–35% higher than that in eutectic crystals for any given interparticle spacing.
