Abstract
One of the incentives for the segregation of human waste is nutrient recovery. Segregated human urine which is also termed anthropogenic nutrient solution (ANS) is rich in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus. Segregation of ANS makes the remaining household wastewater easy-to-treat, avoiding the expensive and complex systems of nitrogen and phosphorus treatment. ANS contains more than 70 % of nitrogen of the total human waste. Practically the whole nitrogen is in the form of urea which is converted into ammonia in the sewer and retention tanks by biologically mediated hydrolysis. ANS contains % 80 of totol nitrogen and % 60 of totol phosphorus of the domestic waste water. The enzyme urease catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea. The products of the reaction are ammonia and carbamate, the latter spontaneously decomposeing to ammonia and carbonic acid.
