Abstract
Multi-Target Tracking (MTT) is an essential requirement of surveillance systems employing one or more sensors to evaluate an environment that includes both true targets and false alarms. Both civilian and military applications of target tracking are numerous ranging from air trafic control (ATC) systems to surveillance systems. The objective of MTT is to partition the sensor data into sets of observations (tracks) produced by the same source. The most common filtering method in target tracking is Kalman filter (KF), since it is computationally efficient and requires only the last estimate of target states and new radar observations in order to update the state estimates. A maneuver causes a mismatch between actual target motion and the filter motion model. The higher the level of mismatches, the worse the performance of the tracking filter. To overcome these mismatches some approaches have been suggested such as adaptive Kalman filtering and multiple model methods. In multiple target tracking applications a data association scheme has to be employed to extract the information from the specific target of interest and clutter measurements. Data association is the most important part of a multi-target tracker, especially in case there exists many closely spaced maneuvering targets and an environment of dense clutter. Various data association approaches are given in details as well.
