ÖgeModelling and simulation of diesel ship propulsion and ship towing at sea for the prediction of the total ship resistance(Graduate School, 2021-03-15) Kharroubi, Kamal ; Söğüt, Oğuz Salim ; 508132007 ; Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering ; Gemi İnşaatı ve Gemi Makineleri MühendisliğiHumans have been using different types of boats since their early existence on the planet Earth, and for the propulsion of those boats, they have used different means starting with paddles and sails, passing through steam engines, and finishing today by diesel engines, turbines, electric propulsion and nuclear propulsion. Nowadays, it is very clear that the marine industry has reached a very high level of development, but given the insatiable appetite of the human race for improvement and optimization, only GOD knows what means will be used, in the future, for the propulsion of our ships. However, up to the early 1860s, few facts about ship resistance were known and many of the mainstream conceptions of ship powering at that era were false. Consequently, the process of the propeller design was based on the trial and error method, and the propulsion power installed on ships was, most of the time, wrongly estimated. From that time onwards, it became very clear that a methodology, for the estimation of the propulsive power necessary for reaching a given ship speed, is strongly needed. In 1870, W. Froude launched ship models testing for the prediction of the resistance of full-scale ships, and from that time, naval architects have started gaining profit from the potential of ship models towing tanks. Later in the early 1980s, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) came into force and until today it has remained a very reliable tool used in the ship industry for modelling the flow around the hull, the derivation of the ship resistance, and for the design of the ship propeller. Nevertheless, each one of the previously cited techniques for the prediction of the ship resistance has very serious drawbacks. For example, the cost of the ship models and of the experiments in the towing tank can be exorbitant especially when the study of different designs of the same ship is needed to optimize the final design. For CFD packages, the main problem faced is that their user must have a high level of expertise to be able, to simulate a particular situation with the suitable assumptions, and to interpret the generated results correctly. Within this framework, this doctoral thesis intends to introduce a new research line consisting in the estimation of any given ship total hull resistance through the sole modelling and simulation of a two ships towing system in which the towed ship is the ship with the unknown total hull resistance to be estimated. More precisely, this doctoral research is taking the first tentative steps to initiate this research line. It is a doctoral research, which is aimed at verifying the well-known equality between the towline tension, at the stern of the tow ship, and the total hull resistance of the towed ship through the complete modelling and simulation of a Diesel ship propulsion plant and a ship towing system formed by two ships. By proceeding in this direction, this doctoral research is paving the way for the next big step that can be carried out in other subsequent researches. This could be the use of a two ships towing system simulation model to predict, accurately and quickly, the total hull resistance of any ship only by the execution of a simulation on any computer with a normal performance configuration. The main particularity of this new way of investigating the total hull resistance of a ship is that it lends a mechanical engineering perspective to this problem, which is a problem of hydrodynamics by nature. This means that the problem is tackled, mainly, by the use of the theories of mechanics rather than the theories of fluid mechanics usually used to analyze cases involving ship behavior at sea. Namely, the whole approach proposed in this doctoral thesis is based on the modelling and the simulation of the dynamics of the main elements forming a towing system formed by two large sister container ships. So following this line of thinking, the work involved in this doctoral thesis has been subdivided into many separate tasks. These are, the mathematical modelling of the dynamics of the tow container ship, the mathematical modelling of the marine two-stroke diesel engine equipping the tow container ship, the mathematical modelling of the dynamics of the towed container ship, and the mathematical modelling of the dynamics of the towline connecting these two ships. Subsequently, all mathematical models were implemented in the MATLAB Simulink computational environment. Using the necessary input data characterizing all the elements included in the two ships towing system, this system was simulated and then the towline tension, at the stern of the tow container ship, was evaluated and the total hull resistance of the towed container ship was compared to it. The results that have been generated in the different parts of this thesis have different degrees of accuracy, and this is heavily depending on each component included in the simulated two ships towing system, but generally, these results are acceptable. The role of the input data of the simulation model was decisive and the uncertainty about the real values of a considerable portion of the necessary input data feeding the final simulation model has affected the behavior of the final simulation model and reduced the accuracy of the generated results. Furthermore, the relative simplicity of the final simulation model, developed in this doctoral thesis research, allows qualifying this simulation model as very affordable in terms of the needed computational power and very fast in terms of the necessary execution time. In this first attempt to adopt the approach introduced in this thesis, these two features can compensate for the lack of the accuracy visible in some of the results generated by this simulation model. For the results about the comparison between the towline tension, at the stern of the tow ship, and the total hull resistance of the towed ship, they are very promising. However, additional tests and modifications need to be carried out in the final two ships towing system simulation model. These modifications will enable the model to become more robust and will increase the accuracy level of its predictions. This way the model will illustrate more clearly the equality between the towline tension, at the stern of the tow ship, and the total hull resistance of the towed ship, when the wake effect of the tow ship is avoided. In future works, in order to maximize the accuracy of the simulation models developed in the present study, one major supplementary step should be taken. Namely, it is recommended to include additional mathematical models representing some other practical phenomena that have not been considered in this doctoral research, which can strongly affect the behavior of the two ships towing system. These kinds of modifications will make the simulation model sound more realistic and will maximize the reliability of the final simulation model.
