Ultrafiltration membrane modelling: Comparing two mathematical models by sensitivity and uncertainty analysis for Palermo and Corleone (Italy) water reuse case studies
(Elsevier BV, 2025-02-01) Giorgio, Mannina; Alida, Cosenza; Hazal, Gulhan; How Yong, Ng; Çevre Mühendisliği Bölümü; Eksin, Hazal Gülhan
The new EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive requires stricter limits introducing quaternary treatments and poses significant challenges to achieving a sustainable environment. Advanced membrane-based treatment processes combined with mathematical models can be a good solution for facing the challenges above. Most existing literature on membrane filtration models primarily focuses on membrane bioreactors, lacking mechanistic models on ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. This study presents two new UF mechanistic models: a tailored GPS-X module (Model 1), and a custom-made mathematical model (Model 2). The two models were compared using sensitivity, uncertainty, and calibration analysis in two case studies. Results showed a higher capability of Model 2 to simulate membrane fouling and water quality. Model 1 failed in predicting transmembrane pressure and showed a longer simulation time. Both models provided acceptable uncertainty in predicting permeate concentrations.

Investor attention and its impact on portfolio volatility and sectoral risk spillovers in Borsa Istanbul
(Elsevier BV, 2025-02-01) Müge Özdemir; Oktay Taş; İşletme Mühendisliği Bölümü; Taş, Oktay
This study examines the impact of investor attention on portfolio volatility and sectoral risk spillovers in Borsa Istanbul. We use advanced econometric models, including E-GARCH-X, GJR-GARCH-X, and multivariate BEKK-GARCH-X, and analyze daily data from January 2004 to June 2024. We find that abnormal investor attention, measured through the abnormal search volume index (ASVI) derived from the Google Search Volume Index (GSVI), significantly and positively predicts stock volatility. This relationship remains robust in long-short portfolios, even after controlling for risk factors in the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), Fama-French three-factor, and Carhart four-factor models. Sectoral analysis reveals that investor attention intensifies asymmetric conditional volatility in the finance, technology, banking, and mining sectors, indicating heightened sensitivity to investor attention and negative market news in these sectors. The BEKK-GARCH-X model results highlight that increased investor attention amplifies both intra-sector and inter-sector risk spillovers, particularly in the finance, industrial, and technology sectors, contributing to volatility clustering. These findings underscore the predictive power of GSVI data in capturing investor attention, challenging traditional market efficiency assumptions. The results emphasize the crucial role of behavioral factors in portfolio risk management and risk transmission dynamics within emerging markets, given their influence on investor decision-making. Furthermore, these findings suggest that monitoring investor attention levels can be valuable for predicting volatility and managing portfolio risk. Additionally, the findings suggest that policymakers must consider behavioral factors when crafting regulations to effectively mitigate volatility risks in emerging markets.

Electrochromic properties of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate-doped polypyrrole/ nanocellulose composite films
(Elsevier BV, 2025-02-01) Sabina Jusufovic; Gizem Yildirim Bastemur; Dilek Evecan; Sabriye Percin Ozkorucuklu; Esra Zayim; Goksenin Kalyon; Zeki Candan; Ekrem Durmaz; Ayhan Tozluoglu; Ayse Erol; Fizik Mühendisliği Bölümü; Zayim, Esra
This study investigates electrochromic properties of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP)-doped polypyrrole (PPy) and PPy/Nanocellulose (NC) composite films, where TBAP-doped PPy/NC composites were synthesized with various NC content ranging from 0 % to 100 % by volume in 0.1 M pyrrole solution and deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass using potentiostatic polymerization. The optimum polymerization time for depositing a uniform, adhesive and stable films on FTO with higher optical contrast between bleached and colored states are found to be 10 s at a constant voltage of 1.2 V. To compare the electrochromic properties of NC-free and NC-containing TBAP-doped PPy films, cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), and optical transmittance spectroscopy were carried out in 0.1 M TBAP electrolyte. A reversible color change from yellow at - 0.6 V (bleached state) to blue gray at + 0.6 V (colored state) is observed for %40 NC-containing TBAP-doped PPy composite film. CV measurements at the potential between - 0.8 V and + 0.8 V show an increase at the oxidation and reduction peak currents up to 60 % NC in TBAP-doped PPy, but the highest optical contrast and uniformity is observed for 40 % NC-containing composite film. And scanning electron microscopy images reveal that surface morphology changes and cluster/agglomerations on the surface of the films are formed when the %NC value exceeds 60 %. Of the NC-containing composite films, the 40 % NC-containing TBAPdoped PPy composite film exhibits the best adhesion to FTO substrate. Furthermore, the highest optical contrast (25.9 % at 700 nm) is observed for %40 NC-containing TBAP-doped PPy when compared to NC-free TBAP-doped PPy film (18.7 % at 700 nm). Therefore, PPy/NC composite with 40 % volume ratio of NC in PPy was selected for further CV and CA experiments. Compared to NC-free films, 40 % NC-containing TBAP-doped PPy exhibits faster switching time (1.16 s), higher optical contrast (25.9 % at 700 nm), higher coloration efficiency (65.6 cm2/C), and better uniformity on FTO. Our results may lead to the design of a high-performance electrochromic devices using NC-Conductive Polymers, with electrochromic and mechanical properties that can be adjusted through NC composition, especially to create flexible composites with enhanced mechanical strength.
