This thesis concentrates on the analysis and design of robust motion control systems with particular attention on some promising motion control algorithms. Mainly, a generic robust motion control structure is proposed and seen to work very well both theoretically and in the context of applications. This robust motion control architecture has what is known as a model regulator in an inner loop which can be used alone or in conjunction with a feedback controller. This structure can be further complemented by a preview based feedforward control block. This architecture and how it can be exploited to get better results in motion control applications as far as performance and robustness of performance are concerned is treated in detail in this thesis. The main applications treated here are in the area of automobile dynamics control. The robust motion control concepts developed are applied to vehicle lateral control (yaw stabilization) and automated path following. The application of the robust motion control structure proposed here to these vehicle control problems is a new approach, resulting in the development of several application-induced design and structural enhancements. The simulation results obtained demonstrate the superior nature of the results in comparison to those previously reported in the literature. Noting that several practical motion control algorithms involve repetitive tasks or disturbances, this thesis also considers the related, more specific needs of such systems by treating a robust repetitive control architecture also.
