Noise, as a source of environmental pollution, continues to grow in importance with the population increment, high-density urbanization, traffic and new evolving noise sources in urban areas. Noise is perceived as annoying and affects users daily activities when it is above certain limits. Especially in noisy regions noise control is essential to provide comfort and health conditions. Research in that subject demonstrates that noise adversely affects human health in terms of both psychology and physiology. Nevertheless, most of the buildings are designed and constructed without any precautions against noise, therefore causing spaces without proper health and comfort conditions. For this reason it is essential that noise control criteria are defined in building regulations or else in other non-regulatory guides. In many countries, acoustical performance requirements are defined with the environmental and background noise limits and with the required sound insulation of partitions, by building regulations and guides. Besides constituting obligatory requirements for noise control, these values also provide necessary numeric acoustical data for noise calculations and for determining proper building elements; hence participate in noise control at the preliminary design stage. Although being a major factor to achieve the occupant s comfort, acoustical design criteria are rarely interpret into design successfully. Usually, the reasons range as it follows: • the complexity of the design process • insufficient time spent on searching for solutions • absence of some performance criteria • lack of interdisciplinary coordination • drawbacks of cost increase • late consultation to an acoustic consultant Consequently, late taken acoustical precautions cannot integrate with the design and may cause major revisions in design or result in higher construction costs. In the later stages of the project it is harder and more costly to improve a building element that is found to be insufficient in fulfilling acoustical needs. Later modifications can result in wider sections of building elements and major revisions in design as well as overall cost may rise above the predicted amount due to altered materials or increased precautions. Furthermore, if detailing is incorrect, the acoustical performance will greatly suffer even though the building element is known to be sound-proof. All in all, noise control must be included in design from the start. With correct design strategies and proper selection of building elements, efficient solutions can be achieved in terms of noise control. In order to provide acoustical comfort there are some parameters to be controlled starting from the design stage: Suitability to the usage, increasing productivity, health and comfort conditions, impacts on aesthetics and sustainability should be well-understood by architects and engineers who aim to create liveable and healthy environments. The need for simple design methods to facilitate the integration of acoustical theory into design routines creates the starting point for this study. This study presents a tool to assist selection of building elements which meet the acoustical requirements. This selection tool is intended for architects and engineers use at the preliminary design stage, thus should facilitate practical usage and easy comprehension. Within this scope, design steps for efficient noise control have been settled and presented in this study for guidance. Firstly, the acceptable noise level should be determined due to the building type and human activities. By following the design steps, the building is expected to support noise control with its settlement in topography, with its form decisions and zoning, and with selection of building elements. Secondly, a calculation programme is prepared for determination of the required sound insulation value of a partition or a façade element. Determination of required noise reduction of a building element requires complex calculations and extensive background knowledge which makes it impractical to apply in preliminary design stage. In order to assist the process, many tools exist. Simulation software can calculate overall sound reduction by analyzing the model and Excel calculation tables or online calculators serve to calculate single number ratings by transmission loss values. These tools give results with great proximity. Some companies, present acoustical test data of their products for technical assistance meanwhile some others offer simple online simulation tools as well, in order to introduce the reduction of different noise types offered by their products aurally. Rather than calculation of sound insulation need these types of tools are generated mainly for marketing purposes. In order to determine sound insulation requirement of a building element a calculation programme is prepared using Excel. With this programme, it is possible to derive required sound insulation value by entering noise data and selecting one of the predefined curves for background noise level. The programme gives results for both partition and façade element. Apart from that, the programme also calculates composite (average) insulation values of building elements which consist of different components (i.e. windows and doors) and examine their suitability by comparing them to the required values. Thirdly, a catalogue is prepared with the acoustical data, derived from different sources, related to various building elements. The catalogue is aimed to assist the architect in the selection of proper assembly and facilitate comparison among various building elements by demonstrating their acoustical performance. Once the amount of sound reduction requirement is found by the calculation programme, suitable building elements can be determined with the use of catalogue. The catalogue consists of 2 parts. The first part involves technical drawings of described building elements together with their single number ratings and list of materials and the second part contains explanations about assemblies, the acoustical data related to frequencies, single number ratings and, if available, laboratory names. The first part is more practical for use due to graphical expressions whereas the second part is more concerned with the verbal definitions and data. Detailed explanations that cannot be illustrated in the first part are to be found in the second part of the catalogue. Label numbers assigned to each assembly facilitates use of two parts in unison. Within the catalogue, building elements are subcategorized according to their constructional characteristics which affect their acoustical performance in order to assist building elements selection. Building elements acoustical performance are introduced without mentioning any trademarks, thus providing objectiveness in evaluation and comparison among different assemblies. While using the catalogue, noise reduction characteristics of building elements should be the consideration in order to understand different assemblies behaviour against noise. The effects of construction characteristics on sound insulation are explained thoroughly in the study. The catalogue is also structured as to allow digital usage for detailed search and analysis purposes. Filtering headings are generated according to specimens constructional and sound insulation characteristics, thus the data is divided into subgroups. This system enables practical examination of specimens in the catalogue according to specific characteristics and also enables comparison among others. Within the scope of this study, a building elements selection tool is prepared in order to facilitate inclusion of acoustical considerations in a project in the preliminary design stage. A calculation programme and a catalogue is prepared and the data of the catalogue are introduced in the calculation programme as well in order to let them function together. The expected results of this study are: • to involve noise control strategies in design at the preliminary stage, • calculation of approximate sound insulation requirement, thus inhibition of future cost rise and major revisions in project, • practicality in comparison of different building elements by means of acoustical performances, • to support and accelerate the comprehension of building elements with technical drawings. Future studies should include enhancing types of assemblies in the catalogue especially for floor assemblies, windows and doors. The scope is defined as airborne sound transmission in this study and may be revised as airborne and structure borne sound transmission in order to involve impact insulation performances of floors and roofs. Harmonization of different rating systems is studied in Europe in order to prevent negative impacts on sectoral and commercial relations. The single-number values of the assemblies should be revised in the catalogue if upcoming standard EN 16717 defines a new calculation method for them. This would also cause a revision in the calculation programme. Turkey needs to revise its noise regulation so that insulation requirements of partitions will get defined similarly to Europe. Designation of necessary insulation values would reduce calculation requirements, thus simplify the process. The use of building elements selection tool is exemplified on a simple design problem as a case study. In response to the importance of architectural engineering, this study aims to prove that noise can be controlled to an acceptable level, before the acoustician s intervention, if it is included in the design strategy.
