In the International System of Units (SI), the second has been defined to be the duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom. Today, the time unit second which is one of the seven SI base units is the most precisely and the accurately measured one. Today, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and satellite communication systems require high stability and accuracy atomic frequency standards (Atomic Frequency Standard, AFS). The necessity of the satellite systems to be compact and less energy-consuming has accelerated the development of small volume atomic clocks with little energy-consuming properties. This situation has triggered the development of the atomic frequency standards based on Coherent Population Trapping, CPT of atoms by use of bichromatic laser radiation. Formation of the CPT based atomic clock is obtained by the improvement of the frequency stability of the Voltage Controlled Quartz Oscillator, VCXO from values of 10-8 – 10-9 to values of 10-11 – 10-13. Reaching to these values is only possible with feeding an error signal back to the voltage controlled quartz oscillator. The error signal in the CPT based AFS is formed by the interaction of the bichromatic laser beam with the atoms and it is electronically detected by the photodetector. This signal by the photodetector is sent back to the quartz oscillator as the feedback error signal. The frequency stability and the accuracy of the CPT based AFS is related to the quality factor of the signal that is used as the feedback signal. The quality factor for the CPT resonance is defined as: Q= C/∆υ. In the equality, C is the signal amplitude of the CPT resonance (contrast) whereas ∆ is the linewidth of the resonance.Stable AFSs are realized by use of the narrower linewidths and greater signal amplitudes of the CPT resonances as the error signals. The linewidth and the signal amplitude of the CPT resonances differs according to the type of the atomic gas (87Rb or 133Cs ), to the type of the buffer gas (neon, argon, nitrogen), to the temperature of the atomic gas, to the dimensions of the atomic gas cell, to the radiation density of the bichromatic laser radiation, to the beam diameter and also to the polarization. CPT resonance is formed by the interaction of the bichromatic laser radiation with the alkaline atomic gases (133Cs veya 87Rb) where atoms are trapped at the Zeeman energy levels of the ground energy levels of the alkaline gases. The atoms trapped at the Zeeman levels do not interact with the bichromatic laser radiation and these non-interacting atoms at the resonance frequency (at the situation where the frequency of the bichromatic laser radiation is equal to the ground energy levels of the alkaline atomic gases) result in an inrease in the transmission signal that is detected by the photodetector. In the literature, CPT resonance is obtained by sending the bichromatic laser radiation from one direction to the atomic gas and letting them interact with each other (optical pump geometry). With this method, the signal detected by the photodetector contain also the contribution of the atoms that are not trapped at the Zeeman levels. This contribution results in smaller amplitude and broader linewidth CPT resonances on larger Doppler backgrounds. In this thesis work, a monochromatic laser beam counter propagates towards the bichromatic laser beam and passes through the 133Cs atomic gas resulting in the observation of the CPT resonances without the contribution mentioned above (pump-probe optical geometry). The frequency of the monochromatic laser beam has been tuned to a ground energy level of 133Cs atomic gas. By this way, only the atoms trapped in the preferred Zeeman levels are detected and CPT resonances with narrower linewidth and higher signal amplitudes are observed. With the pump-probe optical geometry, the signal amplitude of the CPT resonances observed are about four times higher and the linewidths are two times narrower than optical pump geometry. In order to observe the CPT resonance, the frequency of the monochromatic laser radiation has been adjusted so that it can operate on one of the ground energy levels of the 133Cs atomic gas in the pump-probe optical geometry. The bi-chromatic pump laser beam has been generated using three different experimental approaches. Pump and probe beams are sent in opposite directions and they propagate through a glass cell filled with 133Cs over which the influence of the magnetic field has been decreased. For the bi-chromatic pump beam scheme, in the first experimental set-up two external cavity diode lasers (ECDL-1 and ECDL-2) with wavelengths of 852 nm were used. Pumping laser beam radiation has been obtained superposing the beams from the ECDL-1 and ECDL-2 on the beam splitter. Probe beam is obtained using the laser radiation from the ECDL-1. The linewidth and the contrast of the CPT resonance are investigated at the situation when the light intensity of the monochromatic laser radiation forming the pump laser beam was I_1=I_2 and I_1=0.1I_2. As well as that, the influence of the pump beam intensity and the polarization of the laser beams to the linewidth and contrast of the CPT resonance is studied. In the second experimental set-up, an external cavity diode laser with a wavelength of 852 nm is used to realize the bi-chromatic pump laser beam. The laser output beam from the ECDL is coupled to the Electro-Optic Modulator (EOM) and the laser light is modulated at 9.2 GHz corresponding to the ground energy levels of the 133Cs atomic gas. By this way, at the output of the EOM the center frequency of the laser radiation and its sideband at a frequency of 9.2 GHz is obtained. The ratio of the intensity of the sideband to the center frequency is adjusted to 50%. Modulated laser light beam is directed towards the temperature controlled Fabry- Perot etalon with a Free Spectral Range (FSR) of 4 GHz through the polarizing beam splitter and the quarter waveplate and the reflected resonances from the etalon are observed. Fabry-Perot Etalon is scanned via temperature and the center frequency is suppressed as the cavity length is changed. The pump beam laser radiation comprised of the two sidebands at a distance of 9.2 GHz apart is achieved. The bi-chromatic pump beam scheme using the electro-optic modulator and the Fabry-Perot etalon resulted in thinner CPT resonances (with kHz linewidths) however it resulted in a two-fold decrease in the contrast value as compared with the first experimental set-up. The decrease in the contrast of the CPT resonance is considered to be due to the pump beam reflected from the etalon. Thinner CPT resonances but decreased contrast observed with the second experimental set-up demanded the need for establishment of a new set-up and laser pump beam scheme. For this reason the third experimental set-up is established. In this set-up single ECDL is used. The output beam from the ECDL is coupled to the electro-optic modulator, modulated at frequencies corresponding to the ground energy levels of 133Cs atomic gas and bi-chromatic laser pump radiation is generated. In this way, the spectral characteristics of the pump laser beam are conserved and trapping of more atoms at Zeeman levels is realized. This provided the observation of higher contrast CPT resonances. In this experimental set-up, the influence of the intensity of the pump laser radiation and the probe laser beam diameter to the linewidth and contrast of the CPT resonances are investigated. The quantum mechanical approach has been used to explain the effectiveness of the pump-probe beam optical geometry compared to the pump beam geometry in obtaining thinner linewidth and higher contrast CPT resonances in the 133Cs atomic gas.
