Proper management of the supply chain gain more importance after increased competition in todays world. An accurate supply chain management, shorten the delivery time of products, decreases the inventory cost, increase the accuracy of the demand forecast. Briefly, as a result customer satisfaction wil be increased and total costs decreased. For these purposes, many different models have been introduced by the theorists. Even each model approach is diffrent, main aim is to determine strategies that will increase customer satisfaction and to provide business and production models for decreasing total costs. In the first part of the thesis, definition and importance of supply chain is stated, benefits of investigation under the control engineering discipline is mentioned and finally aims of the thesis are revealed. In the second part of the thesis, different modeling techniques are discussed. In general sense, every model are involved in one of the four types of model. These are operations research models, discrete event simulation models, continuous-time differential equation models and discrete-time difference equations models. Models which are develeped with operations research techniques is based on the average performance of system. Although multitude of methods and the applicability of this type of model is often used in the industry, they are insufficient to understand the dynamics of the system. Discrete event simulation models depend on the experience of the persons and his ability to create algorithms. So many models can be assessed. In addition, probability factor may attend to the this model. Although this model is powerful modelling method, its using areas are shrinking because of the inability to simulate large scale production systems. Continuous-time differential equation models helps to understand the dynamics of the system and provide the opportunity to examine a step of the supply chain under a single equation. Disadvantages of that model is the time delay which is the natural consequence of the model. Delays at production, transportation and process of decision, brought transandental term to differential equations of supply chain model, makes the system difficult to be dealt analytically. Thus achieved solutions are often obtained by using numerical methods. Inability to attaining closed form solutions limit to facilitate the sensitivity analysis of system parameters. Discreate time difference equation models are expression of the continuous time difference equations that are discretized in time.In some processes this type of modeling is preferred because it is appropriate. In this case dead time problem is largely solved. In the third part of thesis, basic supply chain model mainly explained, the dead time effects on mathematical difficulties are addressed, the production system model families are mentioned, and finally production-inventory model with three delays is given in details with using differential equation. xx Although approximation of the functions including dead time to analitic equation is a practical method ,in some situations when the delay of the system is large, the results obtained may be quite different from the real response of the system. Instead of using numerical approach in these cases, simulation can be made for predetermined system’s parameters. But, the results don’t give information about effects of dead time to system , they only give information about the effects to system at the specific points. The most important reason to analyze supply chain system using control theory is that, it enables investigating the system stability. Because stability is associated with costs in a production system. There are two important cost factors existed in the production system .One of them occurs during the production and other one appears in stocks as the inventory holding costs. These two cost elements are in conflict with each other. With using operations research techniques, optimal inventory levels that minimize the total cost and production plan can be determined. When the subject of production plan applicability and ensuring desired inventory levels matters on the agenda, having information about the functioning of the system dynamics is a must in terms of cost. In an unstable system, even the average inventory is at desired level, costs increases due to the stops at the production. On the other hand, the lack of products in stock for a certain period of time, impedes the delivery of products on time. As a result, this reflects as costs in terms of customer satisfaction. In the third section, in addition to those described above, stability of a single delay production model is examined with respect to delay and effect of the dead time is shown. At the end of this chapter, mathematical model of production system with three delay which will be examined in the thesis is given. System is second-order linear time-invariant control system with six parameters. This model includes -decision, production and transportion- three delay parameters, -inventory and pipeline- two controller parameters, and a speed parameter which determine adaptation process when the system is in decision phase. In the fourth chapter of the thesis, different from the first three chapters, supply chain is left aside and is focused on entirely on the characteristic equation of the system delay. In this section, the dead systems with delays are classified according to the mathematical examinability and analysis methods are discussed. Systems with delays can be classified as single delay systems, the commensarute delayed system, multiple delay systems, neutral and retarded type delay systems. The main purpose of classification is to meet characteristic equations whose mathematical examinabity are different on a common ground. In this section, Extended Kronecker Summaion Methods that allows the analysis of multiple delay systems and the two other methods, which are the underlying assumptions of this method, were introduced. The first method finds the stability range with implementing Routh-Hurwitz criterion to the characteristic equations, which have commensarute delay. Two important conclusions have been reached with the second method. First one, although there are infinite number of roots, when the dead time changes roots are switching from finite number of frequency points from the left half plane to the rigth half-plane or vice versa. The second finding is that transitions at these points is independent from value of the delay. It only depends on the frequency value. Extended Kronecker Summation Method allows the analysis of multiple delay system unlike the first two methods offers. The purpose of this method is to find delay range in which the system is stable. xxi In the fifth chapter of the thesis, Extended Kronecker Summation method is applied to three delays production-inventory system and stability map of system for different scenarios are determined. In the first scenario decision delay is taken as zero, in the second scenario a constant value is given to decision delay. Stability maps are obtained for these two scenarios. In the third scenario, it is assumed that total delay is constant, different sources delays have investigated the effect of on the system. In the last scenario, the total production and decision delays taken as constant value. Characteristic equations were obtained in MAPLE for each scenarios. MATLAB code were written to plot stability maps of all scenario. For testing the consistency of the values at the obtained graphs, simulations performedfor the values at the boundary point in Simulink program and it has been found that system at this point start oscillation. In addition to these, with the help of program TraceDDE which is developed by Dimitri Breda, the roots of characteristic equation closest to right half-plane has been found with taking into consideration the delay values in the demarcation point. It is observed that roots are on imaginary axis at the limit values. In the last part of the thesis, the results obtained in the previous section were evaluated and discussed.
