In this study, modeling of a small scale helicopter is realized. T-REX 450 model is well known among hobby network, but it is not prevalent in research community. Firstly a comprehensive literature review is performed in order to obtain mathematical model of a small scale helicopter and a user defined generic helicopter model is designed. One of the important properties of helicopter is the ability of hover and it is a challenging task in terms of control. Helicopters have complex properties such as nonlinear dynamics, underactuated system structure and high degree of coupling between lateral and longitudinal dynamics. Regarding the coupling effect, hover flight is selected as a trim point and linearization process is performed with Taylor series expansion. After linearized model is obtained, it is compared to nonlinear model using same set of inputs. Linearized model is corrected and optimal controller is designed for such multi-input multi-output system. Controllability of full states is tested for hover and outputs are investigated with different input values near hover. Firstly, it is observed that; although controlled parameters are stable, general stability factor does not yield sufficient results. Consequently, robust control is designed to outperform the stability factors. Possible negative conditions in hover is taken into consideration and the H∞ controller is designed with disturbance rejection algorithm. Initial stabilization gain is not required for this algorithm and it is numerically efficient. T-Rex 450 flight in hover is controlled efficiently through designed H∞ controller. After the control of necessary hover states, a trajectory planning is carried out. Because helicopters dynamics may be decoupled for higher advance ratio values, in fact, they may be considered to represent fixed wing aircraft in this condition. Helicopter speed profile is agreement with this observation. Then four satellites’positions and speeds are determined and a navigation algorithm is designed based on four satellites’ measurement of helicopter position. In order to reduce the errors, linear Kalman filter is applied.
