Hicri II. Na’t-i Peygamberi, 3. Kâmet, 4. Ezan, 5. Namaz ve Mahfel Teşbihleri, 6. İstiğfar, 7. Hutbe, 8. Tekbir, 9.Telbiye, 10. Salâlar, 11. Temcit Münâcâtı, 12. Mi’raciyye, 13. Regaibiyye, 14. Tevşih, 15. Mevlîd-i Şerif, 16. İlâhi, 17. Durak, 18. Nefes, 19. Savt, 20. Şuğul, 21. Mersiye, 22. Kasîde, 23. Nevbe, 24.Âyin-i Şerif.
Music is an art based on sound. Among the fine arts, it is one of the most important and powerful ones. Even in the most primitive communities, it had been a factor having efîect in human life before speech. Before learning how to speak, the most primitive communities used to manage their daily tasks initially along with rhythm, and later on, although being quite simple, with a number of sounds accompanying rhythm; that is to say music Religious music referres to ali of the musical works performed in the religious ceremonies and meetings held in mosques and dervish lodges. Religious music arose from the combination of some movements having religious characteristics with the basic principles of music which are sound and measure; in other words it originated from the formation of dance. The early studies on religious music in İslam were performed around the subjects such as kıraat (reading the Koran aloud) and hymns. Therefore, the mystics carrying-out musical studies regarding hymns, and the hafizs (persons who have memorized the Koran) performing studies on tilavet (reading or chanting the Koran) and kıraat appeared as two types of religious functionary who were the foımders of the religious music. Prophet Muhammad’s encouraging the people to read the Koran with beautiful voice resulted in Muslims’ reading the Koran with beautiful voice and nice melody; and their interest in kıraats read as such. Towards the end of the 2nd century of the Hegira, as the period of asceticism (renunciation of the vvorld and its pleasures in order to devote oneself more completely to God) matured into mysticism, a number of very important developments and advancements were also encountered in this field. Without doubt, the most important subject that had undergone the fast and radical changes seen in the first half of the 3rf century of the Hegira was the “Religious Music” (semâ, whirling dance performed by the Mevlevi dervishes). Religious Music is divided into two branches:1) Music performed in the mosques 2) Music performed in the dervish lodges. Music performed in the mosques, refers to music that is mainly related to namaz (ritual of worship centered in prayer in İslam). Its most signifîcant feature originates from its structure of a mere vocal music. In this type of music no instrument is played. Although there are several common factors between the music performed in mosques and dervish lodges, music performed in the dervish lodges differs from the former with its essential feature of being performed with instruments. Another characteristic of this music is that it has a different style and manner compared to the music performed in the mosques. Forms refer to the formats of the musical works, and there are several forms in the religious music same as any kind of progressed music. The basic forms of the religious music and their classification are as follows: 1. The Holly Koran, 2. Na’t -i Peygamberi (the eulogistic mention of Prophet Muhammad in an exordium after ascription of praise to God), 3. Kâmet (the outcry of the muezzins joining in the announcement of worship in the mosque), 4. Azan (cali to prayer), 5. Namaz and Mahfel Teşbihleri (ascriptions or litany of praise to God), 6. İstiğfar (an asking for God’s pardon and forgiveness), 7. Khutbah (sermon deüvered at the noon prayer on Fridays and on certain other occasions), 8. Tekbir (prodaiming the greatness of God in the sacred formula), 9. Telbiye (to ejaculate lebbeyke), 10. Salâ (prayer recited on certain occasions by a müezzin before he recites azan), 11. Temcit Münâcâtı (a prayer, supplication addressed to God), 12. Mi’raciyye (a supererogatory service of worship performed in the night of the Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous joumey to heaven), 13. Regaibiyye (a supererogatory service of worship performed in the night of the first Friday of the month Rejeb), 14. Tevşih (a commencing a clause or a distich with a word the sense of which determines the end of the clause), 15. Mevlid-i Şerif (a chanting of Mevlid either in memory of a dead person or to mark a special religious occasion), 16. Hymn, 17. Durak (tonic note), 18. Nefes (a breathing), 19. Savt, 20. Şuğul (preoccupations of mind), 21. Elegy, 22. Qasida, 23. Nevbe, 24. Âyin-i Şerif (noble act of worship). From a chronological point of view based on centuries, religious music began improving in the 17* century and many musical works were made in the 18* century. It reached its peak in the 1901 century. During this era, several talented composers, mevlidhans, mersiyehans and zakirbaşıs vvere raised and the best examples of ali forms were produced. In the 20 century, the most important activity made in the field of traditional Turîrish music was to determine the religious and non-religious musical works. The main topics of this study are as follows: Description of religious music, its rise and its division into branches were presented under the title of general information. Basic forms used in music performed both in the mosques and in the dervish lodges were investigated and documented with samples of musical notes. Based on references, information on chronological progression of religious music by centuries were given.
