Trigonometric levellingfas the fastest method of deter mining the height differences "between two points; is conti nually attracting the interests of the geodesist» The accuracy of the surveying observations and the ef fect of the atmosphere are assuming greater importance atmosphere is far from "being homogenius and the property which affects surveying observations is the refractive index which varies from point to point. In the vertical angle mea surements bending of the light ray at any point is proportio- nal to the rate of change (- rr-) of tne refractive index in the dh direction normal to the line of sight» The curvature must be integrated from point to point over the line of sight to ob tain the total angle of refraction, R The coefficient of refraction is defined as k = - '- O where, R is the radius of curvature of the earth and o" is the radius of curvature of the line of sight. Many surveyors have tried to find the relations beween meteorological data and the radius of curvature of line of sight which is depen dent on the gradient of refractive index which in turn is dT dependent on the temperature gradient (--7: - ). The temperature dh VII gradient is not a quantity which can be measured easily in the field. Many difficult investigations on this pr blem have been carried out, quite a few very recently, yet in practice we still can not use temperature, pressure or other meteorologi-r cal data to measure atmospheric refraction. The significance of the Gaussian average refraction coef ficient k s= 0.13 did not change in spite of development of surveying techniques and instruments. The purpose of this thesis, is to determine the daily variation of the coefficient of refraction (k) in the Marmara region and to establish a relation between them. In order to determine the coefficient of refraction, two lines of sight were chosen and the elevation differences of the two points were determined by precise levelling. Area I. was in the west part of Istanbul and very close to Büyükçekmece lake. The lenght of sight of line is S = 6399.98i m and the height difference between the end points is H= 84.237 m +2.25 mm Area II. was between Istanbul Technical University and Bosphorus University campusses. The station was near Istanbul Technical Univercity and the two targets which were very close VÎII to each other, were near Bosphorus University. The lenght of sight of lines are S = 3256.OI8 m S2= 3249.39O m and the height differences are H_« 35.196 m + 2.02 mm H = 31.940 m + 2.02 mm The lenght was measured by K+E UNIRAKGER E.D.M. and the vertical angle was measured "by seconds-theodolite WILD T3 on the observation pillar. The temperature was measured by Ass- mann psychrometer and the pressure was measured -by Paulin ba rometer. The refraction coefficient calculations are based on the formulation given by Jordan as given below* 2 2 S S H = S.cot Z + -- - k -- + a - t 2R 2R At the end of observations, the value of k is obtained with + 0.017 mean square error. Based on the daily variation of refraction coefficient and the stastical analysis of the results indicate that it is not possible to suggest a practically applicable equation and it is evident that an average coefficient would not be valid for all seasons and during all hours of a day. IX As a result it appears more realistic to consider the pos sible precautions to minimize the effect of refraction on tri gonometric levelling. These precautions can be listed as given below depending on the season, weather conditions, the positi on of the sun and the profile of the area. Ox 1 ; An effort should "be made to perform measurements du ring the days when the weather conditions are more stable in this way, it is possible to keep the sudden variation of the ref raction coefficient at a minimum level, 0\ 2 ; No measurements should be made the hours of sunrise and sunset, Eventhough it seems very suitable to take measure ments during these hours since, the image is very. clear and there are no vibrations, but the refraction coefficient attains its maximum value and it shows a rapid variation during these hours. 3 ) In case average value is used for the calculation of trigonometric levelling, a- The season b- The time of the measurements should be taken in consideration and dif ferent coefficients should be used. These average coefficients are determine as given below based on the measurements performed, Coefficint. k is defined as k « where n is the ave n number of measurements performed, the mean square error for a single k value is shown as "m " and the mean square error of the average k is shown as nVLn. 1- Maximum refraction coefficient values, for the measure ments conducted during the two hours before the sunset and two hours after the sunrise may be given as; for winter months k * 0.207 » n=124, m, =0.043, M, =0.004 ave k k for summer months k = 0.124, n=51, m,=0.035, M, =0.005 ave k k 2- Minimum refraction coefficient values, for the measure ments conducted during the time span begining two hours after sunrise and ending two hours before sunset may be given as; for winter months k = 0.116, n=ll8, m, «0.029, M =0.003 ave k k for summer months k = 0.027, n=£l, m, =0»025, M, =0.003 ave k k o, 4 ) Performing measurements during the hours when refrac tion coefficient has its minimum value and shows limited vari ation would eliminate the error due to sudden changes of the refraction coefficient. However, in summer vibrations during these hours will cause difficulty in aiming to the target and as a result the significant effect of aiming error on angle measurements should be taken into consideration.
