In order to provide accurate and reliable measurements of important parameters such as electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), antenna radiation pattern (ARP), radar cross section (RCS), there are not any electromagnetic (EM) wave source or objects, that reflect incident EM waves, around the equipment to be measured. Existence of such unwanted EM wave source or objects affects the accuracy of the measurements. Unwanted or stray electromagnetic signal radiation, usually emitted from electronic devices, can be a serious threat to living beings and cause faults on other electronics devices located nearby when radiation is strong. For all these reasons, it is very important to detect unwanted or stray EM signal propagation. Obtaining accurate and reliable measurement results is possible by performing measurements on open field, which there are not unwanted EM wave source or objects that could cause reflection. However, due to reasons such as the presence of unwanted EM wave sources because of occupation of frequency bands, difficulty of finding such an open area where there are no objects that could cause reflections, unstable environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, etc., which may affect the accuracy of open field measurements, it is not possible to perform measurements in an open area. Measurements are performed in a closed area, which is called as anechoic chamber and its walls, ceiling and basement are covered with EM absorbers to prevent inaccurate measurement results caused by reflected or scattered waves, to obtain accurate and reliable results. Anechoic chambers are built to obtain free space conditions in a closed environment. EM absorbers are used to prevent reflection of EM waves incident upon them while performing measurements and to prevent unwanted or stray EM radiation. Absorbers are essential elements for accurate, reliable EMC, EMI, ARP and RCS measurements in a closed environment. Measurements of many electronic systems are performed by using absorbers. Absorption performance of EM absorbers is one of the most important factor, which affects accuracy of performed measurements. Absorbers are structures which have low reflection coefficient depending on chemical, physical, electrical properties of their materials used in or their geometry. Electrical properties of the absorber material have a significant effect on absorption performance as well as other factors. Microwave absorbers absorb EM waves due to their dielectric or magnetic losses which they have. Absorbed EM waves are attenuated and its energy transformed into heat energy. Absorption capacity of the absorber depends on the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability properties of the absorber material. Relative dielectric constant of the material used in the absorber is one of the most important factor of the electrical factors. The relative dielectric constant is a measure of the electrostatic energy stored in the material and affects the propagation speed of the EM wave in the material. Absorbers are generally divided into two main categories according to absorbing mechanism as resonating and graded absorbers. Wedge or pyramidal type EM absorbers, which are commonly used and well known graded type broadband absorbers, are used for EMC / EMI measurements in anechoic chambers. Absorbers, that have good absorption performance in a wide frequency band and a wide range of angle of incidence, are preferable in order to absorb most of the incident EM waves. Thus, almost perfect free space conditions are obtained to perform measurements in a closed area. Absorbers having lower heights are preferred not to limit usable measurements space of the anechoic chamber. Higher height of wedge or pyramidal type absorbers limits usable measurement space of the chamber and restricts usage of absorbers in small and semi-anechoic chambers. Absorption performance of the absorbers used in anechoic chambers depends on absorber geometry as well as various parameters such as the electrical properties of the absorber material. Geometry of the absorber is one of the important factors on absorption performance of the absorber, especially for broadband absorbers. Different geometries are used during the development of the absorbers. There are various absorber geometries such as pyramid, wedge, truncated wedge. Wedge or pyramidal type conical surfaces have better absorption performance due to the smooth impedance transition from the impedance value of free space to the absorber base. Such surfaces provide a smooth impedance transition due to the geometry they have. Gradual impedance transition acts as an impedance matching circuit with a minimum amount of the reflected EM wave. Impedance mismatches are minimized by using wedge or pyramidal type absorbers. Thus, energy of the EM wave incident upon absorber is absorbed at the maximum level. On the other hand, while size of each element (wedge, pyramid) of the absorber structure is larger than the wavelength of the incident EM wave, incident waves are reflected numerous times between surfaces of the absorber elements due to the geometry of the absorber before being reflected back. Thus, EM wave, which is reflected numerous times between surfaces of the absorber elements, is absorbed upon each reflection and lose significant portion of its energy. Diffraction due to edges of wedge absorber contribute electric field significantly at higher frequencies, which effects absorption performance of the absorber. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the diffraction effect in the methods used for numerical analysis of such structures. Method of Moments (MoM) is one of the techniques that can be used for this purpose. From there, considerable improvements are obtained in the impedance matching as well as number of reflections between surfaces of absorber elements and absorption performance is improved by changing the geometry of the absorber structure. In this thesis study, absorption performances of the absorbers are improved by changing absorber geometry not by changing material properties such as chemical, electrical properties etc. A methodology is used based on obtaining an absorber geometry that will provide better impedance matching and provide multiple reflections between surfaces of absorber elements before the EM wave is reflected back. Improving methods used for the analysis of absorber performance is also within the scope of thesis study. Impedance transition of the wedge-shaped absorber varies linearly from the free space to the absorber base. It is required to increase the height of the wedge absorber in order to provide better impedance transitions and multiple reflections between the surfaces of absorber elements, in other words, it is necessary to reduce apex angles of the wedges. However, increased absorber height limits available measurement space of the anechoic chamber. Therefore, it is not preferable to use increased height absorbers in small or semi-anechoic chambers. On the other hand, it is possible to increase the measurement space of anechoic chambers and to obtain the same or better absorption performance by using different absorber geometries with lower heights. Using a nonlinear absorber geometry instead of a wedge-shaped geometry helps to improve the performance of EMI / EMC measurements by increasing the measurement space of the anechoic chamber. In addition, nonlinear absorber geometry provides a smoother impedance transition and / or more multiple reflections between the surfaces of absorber elements. Within this framework, the contribution of this study is proposing a method to obtain surface functions for absorbers that have better absorption performance than a wedgeshape absorber. Scattered electric fields from absorber structures have been analyzed by using the PMM. Reflection values of the plane electromagnetic wave that is E-field polarized along the axes of the absorber structure (TM case) are calculated. Since the TM case reflection performances are worse than the TE case performances, the scope of the study is limited for the TM case only. The organization of the thesis is as follows: In the literature survey, the history of EM absorbers, their development, types of periodic absorbers, anechoic chambers and the use of absorbers in anechoic chambers are described. Within the scope of explaining the methods to be used in the thesis study, EM wave scattering from periodic absorber structures is given and Periodic Moment Method (PMM), which is a useful tool for analyzing periodic absorber structures, is explained in detail in order to provide theoretical background. Obtaining triangle mesh of the absorber structure is shown, using equivalent square cell instead of triangle cell is explained. Square cells with the same area and centroid as the triangular equivalent provide the same scattering values as the less computational time. modified scattering formulas because of using square cell are given. The details of the PMM solution of obtained integral equation, finding solution by closed form double integration method over the reference absorber structure are given in the following section. Advantage of using square cell equivalent instead of triangle cell while performing closed form double integration calculation is shown. Relation between reflection performance and impedance transition for absorbers with different geometries is investigated by performing PMM calculation of sample convex, concave and wedge absorber structures. It has been shown that convex surfaces have significantly better reflection performance by comparing the reflection performances of concave, linear and convex surfaces. Obtaining of convex functions, that satisfy boundary conditions to be used on absorber surfaces, is explained based on some wellknown convex functions. Optimization using MATLAB optimization tools to provide optimal absorption performance of the absorbing surfaces obtained by using convex surface functions is explained. In the absorber performance analysis section, the dielectric coefficients of the lossy material composed of carbon-doped foam, which is considered as absorber structure material, are given, verification of MATLAB program written by using PMM is shown and the results of PMM calculations of absorber designs are presented. Reflection coefficient, phase, RCS and bistatic pattern plots are given for each absorber structure separately. Comparison of the TM mode reflection performance results of the absorber structures and the conventional wedge absorber is presented in discussion section. Results show that convex shaped absorbers have significantly better absorption performance than the conventional wedge type absorber. TM mode RCS performances of the absorber structures and the conventional wedge absorber are also compared. Comparison of reflection results of conventional wedge absorber, parabolic absorber which its local minimum is inside interval, and power function absorber, that have the best reflection performances are presented. A general evaluation of the thesis study and future studies are given in conclusion section.
