An important part of safety assessment of research reactors is the safety calculations requiring the simulation of events belonging to the two wide categories of accidents: reactivity insertion accidents and loss of flow accidents. The most important accident among the inventory of research reactors is the loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in which the duration of the loss of the coolant could be considered as a flow transient. Most of the work concerning LOCA of research reactors in the literature has been done for the latest phase of the accident where the core is totally uncovered and being cooled by natural circulation of air. Whereas, partial LOCA analysis could be especially important for high flux MTR type reactors when reactor core is partially covered with water. There is a gap in the literature for the analysis of the phase until the core is totally uncovered. In this study, it is intended to analyze early phases of a protected loss of coolant accident (LOCA) for TR-2 Research Reactor at Istanbul, and to show the applicability of the presented model to the other similar types of research reactors. The transient situation since the time when pool water is beginning to be lost throughout one or more of the main coolant pipes which were supposed to be broken guillotine-like to the time when the core is totally uncovered is investigated. At the first hand, to simulate the total loss of pool water, Extended Bernoulli Equation is applied throughout the flow path from a point on the pool surface to the point where the break is supposed to be taken place on the coolant pipe passing pool wall. Then, the resulted non-linear time dependent ordinary differential equation for the pool level and the mean velocity of the coolant in the reactor core is solved iteratively. Values of pool level and the coolant velocities versus time are fit to the third order polynomials using least squares method. Once the time dependency of coolant velocity in the core during loss of pool water is obtained, they can be used in the conservation equations for the coolant and fuel plate. The transient during which pool water is lost is separated into two phases; first phase is the duration while the pool level decreases to the top level of the core, and the later is the duration while the pool level decreases from the top level of the core to the bottom level. Two methods are employed in solving the energy equations numerically: an explicit finite difference scheme and integral method and the calculated results are compared. The finite difference solution of the first phase when the water level and mean core coolant velocity is being decreased in a pre-estimated time-dependent way calculated by Modified Bernoulli Equation uses an explicit finite difference form of the energy conservation equations. The later phase, when water level reaches to the top level of fuel plates and begins to decrease until the bottom of the core, needs some modifications to the approach used for the first phase. Because, the coolant channels among fuel plates are filled with air when the level goes below, and the fuel plates are being cooled by air above the water level. This complexity is resolved by using a moving boundary approach in the numerical solution. A Lagrange type interpolation approximation for the derivatives along with interface conditions in the neighborhood of the air- water interface is imported to the finite difference algorithm. The analysis is performed both for nominal and hot channel. The other method, so called Integral Method, employed in the solution of coupled energy conservation equations of the coolant and the fuel plate is based on the the assumption that the profiles(shape functions) of the bulk coolant and fuel plate surface temperatures appearing in the energy equations have the same profiles during the transient as the steady state ones. Since the steady state profiles are known, performing integration along the coolant channel both for energy equations of coolant and fuel plate gives a set of time dependent ordinary differential equations for mean coolant and fuel plate surface temperatures. These equations can easily be solved by an explicit finite difference scheme. Substituting these mean tempratures in the profiles enable us to calculate temperatures for each axial location at each time step. The most important contribution of this study has been enabling us to evaluate the coolant and fuel plate temperatures for nominal and hot channel when the core is totally or partially uncovered as a result of loss of the pool water. For the TR-2 case, results of both methods indicate that local boiling would occur during the second phase of the postulated accident. In the cases where local boiling doesn't occur, the methods used allow us to calculate air and fuel plate surface temperatures both for nominal and hot channel when the core is totally uncovered. The methods used in this dissertation study could be applicable to the other MTR type reactors for the total loss of pool accident and flow transients.
