Özet
In this thesis, Kurdish oral culture and the tradition of ?dengbêj? is being examined-along with today?s dengbêj- in the context of women identity. Oral cultures that existed before, and formed the basis of written culture, manifest some common features in terms of ways of thinking and expression. Though they are named in different ways such as 'rhapsodoi', 'trubadur', 'meddah', 'âşık', 'aşug', 'nakkal', 'dengbej'; oral cultures are carried through transmitters of memory which are similar in terms of their social functions. Likewise dengbêjs also transmit Kurdish people?s oral tradition and culture to future generations through the kilam/stran they sing in order to tell historical events, heroism, love stoires, wars and migrations. Despite the fact that women dengbêjs have always existed in dengbêj tradition, very few among them became visible or have been heard due to the oppression and hindrance caused by İslamic religion and patriarchal discourse. On the other hand, ?despite? the existing social relations determined by gendered roles, women kept producing and remained active parts of this tradition. By shaping the individual and social existence, women contribute to the cultural continuity and accumulation. This paper is based on the field research done on the subject and contains information about common elements of oral cultures, dengbêj tradition, the features of dengbêjs, the forms, themes and histories of their narrative and music as well as information on women dengbêjs. In addition to these, anonymous songs, compositions and discussions compiled by women from the association Komela Jinên Hûnermend û Dengbêj/Association for Solidarity and Coopoeration with Women Artists are also included in this paper.
